General Can the daylight running lights be turned off,

What year is yours, I would suggest you keep them on, or inform your insurance if you turn this "safety feature "(thought not a mot requirement) off, if it's just a case of a duff bulb, replace it.
Its not a legal requirement to leave them on in this country, thanks for your reply.

My point was, its far safer to drive with them on and there's little reason to turn them off? Often people turn them off as one has failed and they cannot be bothered/too lazy to replace the bulb resulting in the warning triangle, on the dash, but yes its in the menu.

I have mine set as on all the time, but wish the rear light could do the same.

We've been round the houses on this one dozens of times and it still gets people's backs up.

I don't have even have them fitted to my car and it doesn't cause me any issues, so from a safety aspect, I just don't buy it. I've been driving for 30 odd years and never had an issue prior to DRL's being forced upon manufacturers to fit them.

I'm more concerned that there are seemingly massive numbers of drivers out there who have neither sat a driving test in their life because they've got a stand in to do the test for them, aren't actually fit to drive because their eyesight doesn't meet the required standard for driving in the first place and are too tight to visit an optician, are suffering serious illnesses such as dementia or have a chronic heart condition but have somehow 'failed' to inform DVLA of their illness and not even their GP can be bothered to tell DVLA, or have been banned umpteen times and continue to drive with no insurance. Those are the people for whom anyone else displaying DRL's, it won't matter a tuppence halfpenny anyway because they don't give a rats backside about other drivers in the first place.

Oh yes, the thing with no light on at the back when DRL's are on, still, day after day, night after night, I see folks driving around with no dipped beam on because they think they're displaying lights because their dash is lit up :bang:

John202020 If my reply came across as being a bit abrupt it wasn't intended to. In my opinion it's each to their own regarding DRL's,

RE: "Safety feature":

You mean an "unsafety feature"?
Lots of people forget to turn on their lights because they see enough with their DRLs and the dash it lit up, not exactly "safe" if you meet one of those in front of you with no tail lights!

I have driven Volvo's and Saabs before buying my Fiat, so I drive Swedish style: lights on 24/7, can't forget to turn them on and helps visibility front ánd back.

I totally agree, yes safety re oncoming cars or pedestrian but you're right it's a modern failure of the driver and design not realising the "lights " are not on, one time you knew as the dash was in darkness auto lights would help in this respect.

We have a 61 plate (2011) 85TA.

When our DRLs are on, the dash is NOT lit up.
Yes, the fuel and temp bars are, plus the trip info/date time, but other than that, totally off. ie Speedo and rev counter are completely off.

It's obvious that the main lights aren't on, just by looking because it's very very plain to see.

Regards,
Mick.

You have to wonder, why did Fiat go to the trouble of providing a menu option of switching off the DRL's? Seems slightly ludicrous from a safety aspect, if that is what DRL's are supposedly all about

Do the very latest 500's still have the option to disable the DRL's?

The dash of my 2016 Doblo is completely lit up without the headlights on. The only clues they're off:
-It dims a bit with the headlights on but I had to adjust that in the setings as well.

The DRL's of my Doblo don't shine much light, so it is very obvious if I'd drove at night without the headlights on, but many DRL's shine so much light they actually provide plenty light to see and blind people coming from the other direction.
Some car brands now have the tail lights on when only the DRL's are on because of that, but many cars (including Fiat) remain dark at the back until the headlights are on.

I think the way manufacturers should go is auto on or manually on but not off ?
The combination of manually on but not off confuses me. What does that look like? Is there a switch to turn something on although it can't be off? Wouldn't that be a rather useless switch then?

What I was trying to say was automatically switch on, or manually switch on say during daytime, but not be able to turn them off in auto . Sidelight option when OFF
