I've had a water noise at start up and switch off that's new, clearly low water/air in the system , so have topped it up and ordered a new thermostat (a probable cause cracked and leaking) well I didn't look first, the thermostat has already been replaced with a metal body one, so where has the water gone?
My fault for not looking first, so where is the second most common cause of water loss, the radiator looks fine there's no leaks round the stat no obvious patches on the floor, there was one drop of water on the gear box casing underneath could have been because it had been raining? I've not really looked yet just out for ideas? Any input welcome.

If you've had an airlock, then maybe the water hadn't gone anywhere, it's filled the space that was full of air. Take off the screw in plug on the water pipe towards the back of the engine bay. Fill the water until it starts to cone out of the hole, replace The plug and keep filling up to the max mark. Run the engine and rev it to push the water round with the rad cap off. This will help to push any remaining air out. I do this now when I replace the radiator.

Thanks I'll try that, seemed OK this morning after topping up, put about a pint in, just wonder where it went, will return the hastily bought thermostat.

God I hope not, 3 weeks on and the noise has come back, tested the level in the radiator(using the screen washer dip stick tube from the Mazda) only 1/3 full !
Will fill it up tomorrow and run up to temp and try to see where its going?

that sounds a right faff, :yuck:
is it so tight in a 500 you can't use the "Chinese Lantern" method like on most small FIAT's:shrug:

With the expansion tank being just at the side of the rad and right at the front of the car, it's easy enough to dip it with a cardboard strip, but hard to get a visual on.

They do sometimes leak at the bleed screw; inspect this carefully.

GOD DAM FIAT QUALITY PARTS,,,,
the heater hose bleed valve(top) has snapped off the hose union, so now it cannot be driven as water leaks out, nor can I get(with the hose on the car) the screw section out to say put a stainless bolt in.

Does anyone know if the bleed valve unit can be replaced on its own or is it only sold as a complete hose(my luck complete only) and if its available anywhere other than Fiat, all I did was fill the radiator.

It's this hose

Drill it and tap it, 6 x 1

D

I'm going to try and remove it tomorrow(probably shouldn't have shoved a screwdriver in it) far easier on the bench?
Is this part;

the pipe that runs along the front of the engine, that the heater pipe connects to? as I suspect it will disintegrate, it looked terribly rusty when I changed the oil and it was clear the pipe did not seal well(maybe that's where its leaking?) at the junction of metal and rubber.

You have to buy the whole hose, mine went, made a temporary repair with some mega resin and never replaced it. I've probably still got the hose at home although I have moved house since I bought it. If I can find it you can have it.

so where did it break..??

at the TEE of the union.., or did the threaded section fail..
The turn wheel part sheared off from the threaded section so have what looks like a "button" the threaded section has a cut in it to bleed the air (so now leaks all the time) the top bit having the sealing ring.
