General Timing chain broken on fiat 500 diesel

My old panda 75hp diesel did 135000 before I changed the chain does my 95hp 500 have the same part number chain and is this engine made at the same factory as the old one

I know this may be a little late to say but I have just had my Panda 1.3 MJ snap its timing chain. There was no valve damage or (unbelievably) any damage to the rockers despite this being an interference engine I believe. She is back up and running now. Hopefully you will have as much luck.

Good luck and I hope you get it fixed ok.

How much did it cost to fix?

These diesel engines seem a problem, I have not heard until now of a single Fiat 500 petrol breaking its timing belt of the TA breaking it's timing chain!

I did it myself but its not a job for the faint hearted. It cost me £250 in parts but that included all the locking pins etc needed for the engine timing.

I researched a lot when I had the problem and it seems the chain issue stems from a combination of lack of maintenance (infrequent oil changes), chain tensioner not working properly and also in some cases the bolts holding the chain tensioner coming loose.

Sadly its a rather common problem on these engines, Vauxhall 1.3cdti is the same engine and you only have to google it anf you will find many stories.

Did yours make any horrific noises when it went? Were you going at any real speed? These factors seem to dictate how much damage is likely to be caused. For example mine just wouldn't start one day but no nasty noises.
