Just curious to hear 500 TwinAir owners experiences with the engine

How long have you had it?

Why did you buy it?

How has it been to service? (problem free/ridden)

What oil do you use, any leaks / consumption?

Would you want a TA engine in your next Fiat? :D

Since the end of July.
However have only really had chance to use it for about 2 weeks.
(Long story)

Why did you buy it?

Sensible compromise, might've bought an Abarth, but had to think about who could be driving it!
Found the perfect solution at the 500 Centre (Parkgate)
500s 105 TA(y)

Touch wood.....

What oil do you use, any leaks / consumption?

Not been serviced in my care yet

Would you want a TA engine in your next Fiat? :D
Yes, it's very addictive!
Puts more of a smile on my face than the Panda (1.1) did.
and that was a great car (y)

Since 2013 (new buy)

It put a smile on my face and the noise reminded me of the 126 I drove as my first car

36k of trouble free non oil using fun

Oh yes, the noise is addictive and the power to weight gives you many many smiles to the gallon. I usually change cars at 18 to 24 months but this one is nearly 4 years old. I love it but will be fitting cruise control in the near future ;-)

I wanted something a bit edgier then the 1.2 but also delivering good economy, despite bad press for poor mpg I think it's more then acceptable considering additional performance. My first car was an original 500 back in the early 80's so I have a bit of an affiliation with the 2 cylinder engine. After nearly 3 years and 26,000 miles I've had no real issues, servicing has been straightforward and after a bit of faffing re correct oil I'm using 0w30 digitek. Yes I would buy another TA, I'd quite fancy a 105 but now that mine has loosened up fully it's great to drive and suits the car well for what it is.

I didn't intend to buy a Twinair. I was at the dealer looking at various used 500's when they showed me a new 500C TA. I was so taken with the appearance, particularly the interior, that I decided on the spot. It was only later I realized it was a TA, of which I new nothing, but, I thought, an engine is an engine.

Now, three years and 12,000 miles down the track with no engine-related issues, I wouldn't be parted from it. True, the fuel consumption is nothing like advertised, but I don't care as I put the boot into it and listen to the TA growl. As I've said several times on this forum, it's put the fun back in driving.

I use the recommended oil and consumption of that appears to be minimal - I rarely have to top it up.

I'd buy another in a flash but it's not available here anymore.

My TA85 is at a touch over 10K km now and sitting on a very reasonable 63mpg.

Other than the 'service campaign' coil replacement it's not given any issues.

If you're considering new keep in mind that the TA is a bad car to test drive as they really need 10K of running in before delivering their best. I used to have to slip the clutch on take off more than I wanted to when new, now letting the clutch out at idle isn't a problem at all, in fact it's surprisingly willing to go at very low revs, basically like a diesel.

I wish Fiat would offer the TA105 in the Doblo :)

How long have you had it?

Since new in 2011, just turned 94K miles

Why did you buy it?

Tax reasons, 10%BIK, 100% write down in first year

How has it been to service? (problem free/ridden)

Use small local Fiat dealer, very good.

What oil do you use, any leaks / consumption?

Proper stuff, consumption minimal.

Yup

Mine has been thrashed, bounced of various things, and still keeps coming back for more.

Cheers

Great thread, I was thinking of changing the wife's 1.2 pop for a Twinair and reading through the comments, it seems to reliable enough......just got to convince the wife now :D

having had pandas over the years decided to buy two 500's for myself and my daughter. Purchased two years ago, she has a 1.2 lounge and I have the twin air 85. She has done 22000 and I have done 9600.
Both cars have been faultless but I have to say the twin air is the car to go for. Brilliant fun to drive. I am mainly in a city/urban environment and this car is absolutely great to whizz around in. Have done a few motorway journeys which proved fast and comfortable.
Love the sound and the nippy acceleration. I do pamper my cars with a regular "snow foam" clean every week and the cars come up looking like they have just come out of a showroom, paint finish seems to be of a very high quality.
My car is on a PCP deal which finishes in January 2017 and I will be buying another 500, will it have a twin air engine......absolutely! I have had in excess of 35 cars since 1958 when I passed my test, expensive cars, big cars, sports cars even, and yet this little 500 with the twin air puts more smiles on my face than anything I have ever owned. Love it to bits!

When I brought mine in 2013, it was the culmination of a lifetime of dreaming. I had long given up owning a 500. Two marriages and three children put paid to any spare cash :( However, circumstances changed and I was able to buy my first new car. It is a Colour Therapy twinair, 0.9 and obligatory turbo :), I went to the show room and looked in the catalogue and fell in love immediately. Tech House Grey, white alloys, mirror caps and aerial..nice to look at but a b****r to keep clean .. The test drive was so so until he showed me the eco button..that changed everything..I had my growl back :) I previously had a Marea Weekend, 2.0 L 20 valves and 150 bhp and a growl every time I floored it. My daughter wouldn't ride in the car unless I promised to make it growl ... I also tow an Eriba Puck with it, increases the fuel consumption to at least 44 mpg, due to its shape, and I am not the only one ! So far, touch wood, nothing untoward has emerged...fingers crossed.

I bought my TA Lounge in March 2011 to replace a Mini Cooper. My wife and I both liked the look of the 500 and when the Twinair engine was announced I thought it would give a good performance and economy compromise for my 23 mile each way commute. A test drive impressed us enough to buy our first brand new car for 20 years, and we've had no regrets 42000 miles later.
Servicing has been routine and annual. The only issues have been a precautionary turbo replacement after 1 year, f.o.c. as it was a Service Campaign, and a slight coolant hose seepage, easily fixed. I've never kept a car for more than 3 years before, so the 500 must be good as we've had it for nearly 6!
Although we love the TA engine in the 500, I think Fiat may have put too much faith in it for bigger cars in their range - I think it's been dropped from the 500L. I've driven a couple of modern 3-cylinder turbo cars I've hired for work. The 1 litre Fiesta ecoboost was great, and the 1 litre Astra had really strong performance. Both were much smoother than the Fiat at low revs, and both returned over 50mpg on long 60-70mph trips, similar to the figures I get from that kind of motoring in the lighter 500, so I don't think the twinair engine is as clever as Fiat would have us believe. Still brilliantly suited to the 500 though, I'd recommend it to anyone prepared to pay a bit more for styling in a small car.

Two years.
I read the blurbs and was impressed.
Easy to service. Easier than other cars as there no cam belt to change, but other than that, it's a car. Just like all the other cars.
I use the correct oil spec.
No leaks. Why should there be any leaks?

Do I like it?
You bet I do! :):):):):)

Oh yeah, forgot the oil bit in my ramblings above. My handbook specifies 5W 40 synthetic so I supply it to the indy that does my services - I've been using Petronus Syntium 3000AV, and he returns the container with the remainder of the 4l for top-ups, although it hasn't needed any. Mine gets serviced annually, and I've kept the mileage down by using our other car some of the time to around 8000m per year.

At the start of the thread, there's a picture of a 500 next to your name, but on the participated threads list, the picture is your Panda again. It's probably just the app doing weird things like it is for me atm.

Bought the 500 TA as my wife's 1.4 16v Fabia was 12 years old. The brief was either Vauxhall Adam or Fiat 500 and it must be as quick as the Fabia was.

I couldn't find an Adam 1.0 turbo for love nor money and the 1.2/1.4 engines are just too souless. I had the 1.4 in a corsa and it was ok but a bit flat.

So I turned to the 500 and remembered that I test drove a TA when they first came out.

Found a gorgeous 2014 TA S pretty close at a main dealer and went to test drive.

The wife and I were in fits of laughter driving off the forecourt on the test drive, the noise and the character that little car has is second to none. We bought it straight away.

We fight over the keys for it now...

Yes it doesn't match the official MPG figures but shmickles, who cares.

We have only had it 2 months, but it has been perfectly behaved so far touch wood. Quick, Soulful and fun.

No. Awful car.

Had since April 2016 brand new 105. Broken down twice before it had 400 miles on the clock. Been in the dealers three times for at least a month in total. Had new:

Multi air unit
ECU
Thermostat
Coolant expansion tank bottle
Water pump

Still drives like it's got terrible turbo lag/flat spot when pulling away and in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears - almost like the message from the accelerator is taking a second to get to the engine. Had it 7 months now and only 1200 on the clock as we don't really trust it.

Without the driving problems we'd like it. It looks great and has all the gadgets we'd ever want. But pulling away the (very lovely) 500 1.2 ByDiesel we had for the previous 6 years, was way less powerful but got off the line miles better.
