Hi,
No 500 needs an adaptor to access the engine ECU, see
http://www.multiecuscan.net/SupportedVehiclesList.aspx
so try without it. You do need the A3 (yellow) adaptor for most other functions including service reset.

Thankyou fellas. I'm going to try it this morning. Fingers crossed. I've bought a second hand coil pack from eBay as well as the new battery on the offchance. I can always sell it again if it's not the coil pack and save the battery for a future car. It can be bottomless pit some times.

Let you know if it works later.

Yeahhh, it worked and has thrown up the fault code P1220 Accelerator pedal potentiomer (feasibility). Done a bit of googling but struggling to find where this thing is. Is it on the pedal itself or under the bonnet?

I found this video for a Stilo

Any one give me an idea where to find this thing?

If you have a throttle cable, the potentiometer is on the throttle body. More likely, it is 'fly-by-wire' so there is a potentiometer on the throttle pedal. This sends signals to the ECU which then opens the throttle flap in the throttle body as calculated and controls fuel injected to suit.
I doubt the potentiometer is serviceable, so check all connections first, if no fix, needs a new one.

When Andy came over from North London yesterday to reset his airbag light and do a proxy alignment, while I was doing that he took off his air filter and saw that he had a split hose and that the air intake was full of oil. I used some brake cleaner to clean it out while he depressed the accelerator. On his car the flap opened fully while I sprayed the brake cleaner in. When I did it on my car later that day, it barely opened. I've ordered a pedal and a brake housing from eBay so I'll change both and see what happens. Thanks

A while ago I looked for a similar program for VW, and only found one at about £300. Can't remember where now, but managed without.

That'll be the Ross-Tech VCDS system, which I've been trying to use... always have to go the dealer in the end to clean up the mess..! The software is complicated and confusing, the adaptations for my Golf are all in German, and almost any setting carries the risk of stuffing up something else. And as you say, costs about £300.

MultiECUScan is a walk in the park by comparison. I'm always pretty keen to keep it up to date, as there are often features added for older models (I remember the Punto coverage being surprisingly sketchy for such a popular car, but it's fixed now). Yani works hard on it, I feel it's well worth the money.
