Hello, my Fiat 500 1.2 2009 got the problem with steering wheel, during driving there is alert of steering wheel on instrument cluster, then the steering is not powered anymore and becomes very heavy. I tried stopping the car, switched off and started the car again, the alert disappeared and the car turned back normal stage. The Fiat services center had checked many times even cleaning the connector of steering motor, the alert still happen sometimes. Has anyone got the same problem? How do you fix it?

Get the battery checked.

The Batterymegastore has great prices too I've found, with free next day delivery, Europarts had a 15%off offer but not sue if it's still valid.
Did hear about issues connecting the battery in stop start cars maybe someone will clarify that or might have been jump starting.

Most '59 cars probably won't have S/S, in which case the OP will only have to pay £40-£50 for a decent replacement battery.

As others have said, replacement is the first thing to try, even if the existing battery appears to be serviceable (unless of course it's been replaced recently).

Might be worth charging the battery up. My 58 1.4 car still has the original battery in it and is going strong through the cold etc nothing stops it!

Thank you very much for your advice. All of you point out the same reason: weak battery. But the car's starting is still very good, the battery was installed from July/2014 ==> less than 02 years. How do you think? Is it still battery issue? Is steering wheel failure more sensitive than the starting issue?

An electric steering motor failure wouldn't be out of the question. In 2011, I owned a 1.2 POP that went into a Fiat dealership for a diagnostic software update, only for them to discover that the electric steering motor was showing as 'faulty'. They replaced it under warranty. It's only a thought........

I have always found Euro Car Parts good for batteries - they do quite a range. They have a discount at the moment 'BAT25' gets you 25% off.

Thanks you guys. Yesterday I installed a cloud based data-logger to record the Battery voltage . You can see attached photos. I guest there should be no problem with battery. The min voltage during starting was 9.41V. Can anybody analyse these trends?

I am newbie, can not upload images. So I don't know how to show these trends.

9.4v is lower than it ideally should be. I see around 11v on my DIY stop start system (Renault).

Minimum voltage with engine off and a good battery installed, ideally shouldn't drop below 12.3 volts. If yours is dropping to 9v, there's definitely an issue with the battery or the system isn't charging correctly, but I suspect most definitely the battery, especially if it is the original.

I can't speak for the 500, but I have a Scangauge permanently wired up in my Saab into the OBD port and when the vehicle is running, it shows pretty much a constant 14.2v. When the engine is switched off, it barely drops below 13.5v, but then my battery is only six months old.
