Technical Another ESP/Hill Holder Fault Thread!

May as we'll do this now instead of waiting another week as I did an unexpected journey to Liverpool today - combined with the running around I've done since changing the brake switch it amounts to over 350 miles driving about and the fault has not reappeared at all.

Luckily for me the cheapest of the potential causes was the actual cause - the brake switch when dismantled clearly shows signs of electrical contact damage/wear and this was unquestionably causing the fault. Still stunned that a pinhead sized faulty component could knock so many systems out on such a modern, and small motor.

Happy ending folks. I like getting happy endings. Hopefully this thread will be of some use to peeps putting up with the same issue

where can i find the switch? are you able to take a picture of its location? thanks

I have the same issue with ASR/ESC error. After replacing brake light switch, everything works fine now. For an AUD30 part, it is very cheap fix indeed. By the way the brake light switch is not near the brake pedal column but at the passenger side under the panel. Just uplug the electrical wire and turn anti clock to release the switch from the mount. Easy fix within 2 minutes. By the way, if you have difficult pushing the switch back against the brake metal bar, you may turn on the engine and the brake metal bar may give way for inserting the switch into place.

Hello,

Had the ESC light and 'hill-holder unavailable' message on a 2014 fiat panda 1.4. Happened after GF stomped on pedal while getting outof parking spot uphil. Turns out brake light switch had actually popped outof the bracket in passenger footwell of a RHD car. Put it back in place and all okay now. Hope it helps anyone before buying any new parts.

Thanks heaps for this thread! Had the exact same issue in my 2010 Fiat 500. Got a new brake light switch, and have been driving the car around for 5 days now and no re-occurrence of the fault.

The official part number for me was 46840510. Mine took a bit of effort to get to twist into place, but yeah, a 2 minute job.

I'm in Australia - got mine from Italian Automotive Spares (in Brunswick VIC - I only created this account to say thanks, so I can't post links) - was $29 AUD, but then postage took it up to $40. But I'm sure I saved myself heaps trying to get that figured out where I get my car serviced.

Anyway, thanks again!

Just a few words to add to this thread. During the covid19 lockdown my 2015 500 twin air started showing the hill holder/esc and stop start unavailable fault lights. Having read your comments I took out the offending break switch from in the passenger foot well, RHD car, where the break pedal would be in an Italian car. It looked just like the one in the photos above. I messed about with it and pushed the plunger in rapidly quite a few times. I refitted it and so far 3 weeks later I have still had no warning lights pinging up. What a result! In normal times the car would have gone into the dealer while I was in work but even a 60 something granny was able to do this. Mind I have ordered a new part just in case.

Hi, this sounds very similar to my issue, like the approach.. could you advise me where the stop light switch is located (2011 500C) going to replace this first..
