I have purchased a set of new abarth shocks from a car under going an esseesse upgrade. Is it necessary to replace the top mounts when replacing the front shocks?

The car is a 2008 and has covered nearly 72k although I have no idea if the shocks are original or not.

I am thinking that it is most likely a good idea although if it is not necessary then why waste the money.

Personally, yes, I'd buy new top mounts at the mileage your car has done.
