I've had my '08 500 back to a local independent Fiat specialist to try (again) to get the odometer to stop flashing.
He went into everything and there were absolutely no faults present. He did a proxy alignment but still no joy.
I've previously tried disconnecting the battery (for over 24 hours).
I'm wondering whether it could be something to do with the ecoDrive system? It does sometimes comes up with the message 'memory low' and the odo does stop flashing for a while.
Or could it possibly be something to do with the Blue&Me system?
It's doin' my head in now!

There are lots of threads on Blue & Me failures, often as the result of an 'update'. Any B&M failure will cause the mileage to flash.

I think the Ecodrive is either part of the B&M system, or closely related to it, so this points at the problem.

Probably needs a new B&M unit, which is expensive. An alternative is to disable it, using the same software as the proxy alignment, then redo the proxy and the mileage will stop flashing. But you'll lose the B&M and Ecodrive.

If you've not updated it, you could try asking Fiat to meet some of the replacement cost.

A flashing Odo meter means that the CAN-b has a error. Which is unfortunately most common caused by the Blue and Me module. The dealer can preform a so called "proxy-agliment", the WiTech-system relearns the systems to the correct specs. I use it almost every day :p

The garage did a proxy alignment with no success.

If the B&M module is dead, a proxy alignment will fail.
Either, replace the module, then redo the proxy alignment, or use the proxy machine to disable the B&M module, so that the car ignores it, then redo the alignment and the mileage will be fine. But you will no longer have bluetooth, but you've lost that already.

There seems to be lots of issues with the B&M modules dying, especially when attempting to update them.

I have carried out the operation of disabling the B&M, then doing a proxy alignment using MultiECUScan and was successful, on a Grande Punto.

Have you checked the hatch wiring?

A rear hatch wiring fault triggered this issue on my 500. If there is a physical fault with the wiring, diagnostics can't be trusted and all other bets are off - this must be fixed first before doing anything else.

Checking the wiring under the grommet where the rear loom extension passes into the tailgate should be the first thing you do on any 500 with any kind of electrical issue.

Note that you can't check this without peeling back the grommet and looking at the wires - the wires will fail long before the grommet does.

It's an extremely common problem on any 500 more than a couple of years old.

Thanks, I'll check this today.

I've checked the wiring going into the hatch and it looks fine. No chafing or damage to the insulation. Checked the hatch end and the body end of the grommet.

You need to carefully peel back the grommet, and any insulating tape, to be certain all is well.

This is typical of the kind of damage that's commonly found.

I've had the battery of and charged it and then put it on an optimate for a few days. It's holding it's charge fine.

There can't be anything wrong with the battery to cause the flashing, or can there??

A weak battery can cause issues , yes.
