I have a Fiat 500 Twinair 85hp from 2012 and it has developed a problem with the steering. At motorway speeds (around 65mph and above), the steering wheel drifts to the left and starts to vibrate.

I have recently had suspension parts replaced as part of the service by Fiat main dealer, and the rear tyres replaced also. The tracking was done as part of this, so I'm not convinced taking it to a tyre place and getting the tracking done will help.

Any ideas? I do a lot of motorway miles and it's very annoying

This sounds dangerous. Maybe there is a problem with the steering wheel position sensor. I would visit the FIAT dealer asap.

well obviously you go to the fiat main dealer that did the work!

I forgot to mention in my OP that I have already been back to the main dealer who did the tracking and balance, they acknowledged that the tracking is out and corrected it however could find nothing else wrong...

The two rear shock absorbers and the off-side suspension arm and ball joint, plus the two rear tyres.

Yes, when held in a dead straight position it drifts left slightly on its own if grip is loosened (only at speed). It never used to do this

Suggestion:

Cars will do this, but it's normally due to the camber of the roads.
The road slopes of to the left with the white line at the highest point.

If your car didn't do that before, it must have been drifting to the right to compensate for the camber.

Regards,
Mick.

Yes that's correct, it's very rare to find a perfectly flat road without the camber that Mick describes.

The vibration at 65 is very typical of out of balance wheels. I'd suggest getting all 4 balanced. Vibration through the steering suggests that it's the front wheels but you can never be sure.

Thanks for the advice, I will check all of the tyre pressures first and if that doesn't rectify it, get the wheels balanced.

Check your tyre pressures. If one is low it will affect the handling. :)

THIS. I took my in to the dealer and mentioned the same problem within the first year of having my 2013 TA and it was unbalanced front tyre pressure.

Okay, so I checked the tyre pressures. They were all set incorrectly, but the one of the back tyres was set 6PSI higher than the other.

The problem is now solved and it is returning better MPG too

Moral of the story, don't trust the tyre shops to set the pressures properly!

One more success for The Fiat Forum..
