Will there be a price hike or price drop incentive on sub 100 g/km cars before 2017 when we start paying £140 pa for VED for "standard" emission cars.

Mr Osborne said: "There will be no change to VED for existing cars - no one will pay more in tax than they do today for the car they already own."

Therefore my Fiat Colour Therapy will still be £ 0 per annum. :)

I wonder how the new VED will affect sales of the TA from 2017 on....

Don't see why it should have much impact. I bought my TA because I preferred the performance and sound over a 1.2, not because it would save me £30 a year in VED. Jumping to £140 sounds a bit severe, but compared with other costs, particularly depreciation, it isn't a major factor in running a car.

Also, it will be interesting to see if there is a mad rush for zero or low VED cars in March 2017 - new reg. and the last of the low tax cost!

Anyone buying any car on the basis of its fiscal advantages would do well to remember that they could be changed at any time.

The Chancellor giveth, and the Chancellor taketh away.

Indeed!

Have always felt it was only a matter of time before something was done with the current system. Feel a tad sorry for drivers of cars that emit 1g/km though...:D:D:D(y)

Just had a quick peek at the Abarth 500 and the 1.4 16V T-Jet currently comes in at 155g/km, which translates to £180 a year tax.

Under the new proposal, you'd be looking at £500 tax for the first year:eek:

For a 1.2 or TA, this would appear to add about 10% of the vehicle's new price to the lifetime ownership costs.

Of course, a lot can, and probably will, change during that lifetime.

One thing is for sure - it will raise the government quite a bit of revenue.

Looks basically like another stealth tax to me.

So when does the new VED take effect in 2017, isn't it January 1st?

I bought our TA because it was zero VED.

The sound and the performance is a bonus, but the zero VED was the clincher.

Yes, it's a big hike form zero to £140.

Cheers,
Mick

Sorry, have just Googled that and see it is April 1st 2017

I think a problem for the TA might be that a car that emits up to 150g will only cost £80 more in VED for the lifetime of the car, as it stands now.

Nice to see a healthy debate going on (y)
Tax rise unfortunately seemed inevitable, due to all the sub <100 gm emission cars being produced .
I do however hope as they have said that most of the money raised will be spent back on the roads for upgrading and repairs as this is badly needed .
Whether they keep their word on this remains to be seen ,we need that spent on roads now though not in 2017-18!!!

I'm only surprised I've kept the zero VED as long as I have - Boris was quick enough to move the congestion charge goalposts.

How about all the tax they raise on beer goes to keeping breweries open?

Sorry, but Churchill stopped the Road Fund back in the 1930s because he saw that car drivers would consider that they owned the roads if they paid for them.

Pedestrians should pay too?
Horse riders?
Hikers?
Skateboarders?
Cyclists - like me - should pay as well? :bang:

In order to drive a motor vehicle on the roads, you need to be licenced. You need to pass a test, you need permission to use the roads. It isn't a given right.

Roads belong to people, not just motor vehicle drivers.

Regards,
Mick.

I always thought zero road tax was not going to last, but whilst i'm never happy about paying tax, the country roads around where i work badly need repairing.

And yes cyclist's should also contribute, they do also use the roads.
