Evening all,
The sump on the 500 has perished and the oil is starting to leak through.
Has anyone done a sump swap or know what has to be removed to get the old off and new on?
Cheers

Huh? I guess you're really not joking......

I've only ever had to replace the sump pan on one car in my life and that was on my old Primera, but that car was 14 years old at the time and had done 120k. I was lucky, I caught it just in time. How many miles have you got on your 500?

Anyway, sounds like you want to do it yourself. When I had mine swapped out on my Primera, I put it into a local garage, a job I definitely couldn't be bothered to do.

Not sure if you've found/bought a new sump pan, but they're hardly expensive:

I wish I was joking, could really do without this as there is also a clonking coming from the front when you turn the wheel and the tyres need replacing, all comes at once.

It's a 2008 with roughly 65k on it. When it was in for mot Oct/Nov time I was warned it was going and today was the first oil patch and sure enough the sump is now wet.

A Google search revealed a diesel panda needing change and exhaust comes off and I think a petrol 500 was gearbox off. I could do exhaust ok but not gearbox.

Yeah thankfully the part isn't too bad but labour could be so I'd be looking to do it myself.

Cheers

does your fiat 500 have an undertray? i know that the 1.4 has one but the 1.2 doesn't. not sure about the diesel. if it doesnt have an undertray, i am not surprised about the rusting espeically with UK climate.

If its anything like other models in the Fiat range, the steel sump pans rust rather quickly, but are relatively inexpensive to purchase. Fitting isn't too difficult either, just make sure when you do get new sump fitted, you give it plenty of layers of paint, keep checking it every year and retreat as necessary.

I recall this issue cropping up some time back on here. Can't say for sure whether it was for petrol or diesel, but if you have the patience to trawl the forum, it might prove helpful.

Thanks for all the replies. Yeah there is no belly pan so it's taken a beaten in the 7 years on the UK roads. My plan was to paint up the new one, what paint do you recommend?
A Haynes manual description would be great thanks.
I've done a search but it was for a petrol version unfortunately and sods law diesel will be different.
Cheers

I'm not sure Haynes would describe removal of the sump pan except when the engine was out of the car - hope I'm wrong here - but back in the day, they used to list jobs that could be done with the engine in the car, and jobs that required removal. That could be semi useful.

Unfortunately, I've got rid of my manual, so can't check for you.

Right. Haynes does list sump removal for the 1.3 as an "engine in car" operation.

Their steps are:
Disconnect battery
Jack front and support on axle stands
Remove front right hand road wheel and lower panel of wheel arch liner
Drain oil, refit drain plug with new seal (and may as well replace oil filter)
Remove centre exhaust pipe and rear(?) silencer
Remove bracket between lower/rear engine mounting rod and transmission housing
Remove cylinder block to transmission support. Note different length bolt locations
Disconnect oil level sensor connector (if fitted)
Undo nuts and bolts securing sump to cylinder block baseplate and timing cover. Use a wide scraper to get between the sump and baseplate and break the joint.

Refit appears to be a reverse of removal, careful to remove all the old seal and add a 2mm bead of sealant to the sump mating face before refitting.

I'd say it's "involved" rather than "difficult". I'd also urge you to buy a copy of the Haynes manual.

Magic, that's great, thanks for the break down.
That doesn't sound too bad, though one or two bits sound a bit odd, still worth giving a go I think.
Yeah a Haynes could be a good shout, I have one for the bike so I'll get one ordered up.
Any recommendations for paint for the sump?
Cheers

Yep; I presume the rear silencer is either a typo or due to the exhaust being one piece.

I'd be tempted to have a look if it's feasible to do with it up on a pair of ramps; they're my MASSIVELY preferred lifting solution.

Yeah with any luck if the exhaust is loose at the front it'll allow me to wriggle the sump out.
I've got ramps thankfully, don't really fancy doing it on jacks.
Cheers
