General Brakes - any complaints?

General Brakes - any complaints?

And that's what I've got. I braked hard today and it kept traveling... Am currently in a neck brace in A&E.

oh dear my condolences I hope you are ok. Did the car slide at all or were the brakes not powerful enough. Bad tires can also cause braking issues. The only way to know for sure if your car is worse than normal TA 85's is to test drive one. Maybe try it out. How is the car?

No complaints from this user. I've slammed on our brakes really hard on a couple of occasions causing the ABS to kick in (yes, the juddery pedal thing!) and the car stopped just fine. Ours is a TA85.

How old is your car? Brake fluid been changed at all? Pads on the front ok?

really? i found the ta 85 brakes to be not good enough.

Thanks ahmett and Frupi. No ABS kicking in unfortunately. 3 year old car with shiny new MOT. The car has front and rear damage but could be much worse. My mother somehow hurt her leg and is also in the hospital. I've driven big cars for years because I feel so vulnerable in a tiddler!

Yes ahmett, really! Believe it or not, many of us don't drive around small towns in the middle of England like we're clearing out every Euro that might be left in Athens and then doing a runner! The Lounge TA85 isn't a sports car, it's a small city car that doesn't require 6 pot stoppers!

still the 1.4 has much better braking performance = )

hope you both get ok soon.
and yes i believe any car smaller than a VW golf is a safety risk in an accident, you can keep your Euro NCAP 5 star rating Fiat 500!

I'm very sorry to hear of this, I didn't realise you'd actually had an accident

I hope first and foremost your Mother gets well soon and secondly, that the damage to the car is easily repairable.

To be fair, the ABS will only kick in if you absolutely stamp on the brakes. I err, do it quite often in the Saab lol!

Thanks. I kinda did stamp on the brakes. You know, about to crash.... Not the time to flirt with the damn pedal ?

Trust me, you'll know if the ABS has kicked in, you'll get a very noticeable judder on the brake pedal as the car comes to a halt :p Clearly I have no idea about what distances there were between you and the car in front and the car at the rear. Even if you reacted quickly, if you were all quite close together in the first instance, the car may have appeared to be slow at stopping purely because of how quickly everything happened. Hope that doesn't sound double dutch

I'm sure you have an understanding of how ABS works, but for anyone that doesn't, please see the link:

+1.

Interestingly enough, not braking hard enough in an emergency is a recognised thing. Some cars (Mercs especially) recognise this and will boost brake pressure as needed.

The chance of total brake failure on a modern car (dual circuit) is so minimal as to be none existent.

I've got a 1.2S and the brakes are shockingly poor. I'm no light weight but the odd time when I've felt the need to stop quickly you really have to stand on the brakes. The abs hardly kicks in and next to nothing happens.

Not impressed. I had thought of posting a question about different pads which may have a little more bite than the fiat standard fitment.

Thanks, RussH. The ABS should have kicked in for me; the brake pedal was flat to the floor but no cigar. The car is beautiful but handsome is as handsome does.

When I took my TA85 to a track, the time keeper commented on how well it stopped.

A German mag tested the TA85 braking distance from 62mph at 37.9 metres. If you compare that to this table:

http://www.movitcars.com/rahmen/stoptbl.htm

You'll find that's better than a Mitsubishi EVO 5 or a Porsche Boxster!

Modern ABS systems no longer cause a noticable judder throught the brake pedal. You'll feel a slight judder through the car, rather than the pedal.

My car is slow to brake. Has anyone else got complaints? Is this a 500 thing?
Our 500TA is very sharp in braking.

I reckon it's too sensitive. Too sharp and sudden, and would be better if it were more progressive.

Other than that, our braking is powerful and it gives confidence that you can stop.
We live in a very hilly area and brakes get used a great deal, so I'm no stranger to braking!

Regards,
Mick.
