True enough if you buy your fuel by the kilo. If you measure miles per kilo then the diesel's MPK wouldn't look so great. For people buying in fuel in litres it's easy to forget that while the MPG looks great, the CO2/litre is less so.

By any rational analysis, the most modern diesel cars produce far more dangerous pollutants than the most modern petrol ones.
Far more? You must be joking! The most modern petrol engines, those with direct injection, produce particulates just like diesel engines do. That's the reason why the Euro 6 legislation for petrol engines has a particulate matter limit exclusively for petrol engines with direct injection!

i am in the UK right now and rented a Merc A180 CDI 7G-DCT. Fuel economy 5.2l/100 km with my driving style = )
as i driver i mainly care about my pocket so if i did so many miles, would defiantely buy a diesel.
people say diesels may cost more to maintain over the lifetime of the car, but seriously i doubt modern turbo petrol cars are that reliable in the first place.
lets see how those TA's get along in a few years vs the bulletproof 1.4!!

Hi All,

I bought a 95 BHP 1.3 multi-jet in March after having had both a Panda 100 HP & 1.4 T-Jet Abarth. The multi-jet has had a probitz tuning box fitted and now kicks out an impressive 118 BHP, I must admit it is so much fun to drive with the extra torque at lower speeds. My local Abarth dealership took it out for a drive, his words were " that will show up a lot of cars ". The service manager then took out and was amazed how much torque there was. Running on Shell Nitro + just makes it even better, I do around 80 miles a day and averaging around 62-64 mpg.
The question that answers what to buy is how many miles you will do, low milage petrol high milage diesel is a must.

to the OP;:)

I had almost the same issue, wanted to buy a NEW punto,

either the 1.3 derv or 875 twinair:confused:

my commute was @1 hour long.. BUT possibly not long enough for DPF regen
town centre for 30 mins.

Twinair has great character, £ZERO UK tax, (y)
and has average 50mpg over the last 26 month - 18.5K miles - 6 speed box probably helps :worship:
I had the 1st FIAT common rail diesel - Marea 105 JTD and hated its "driveability" compared to older TD's.. great MPG but no guts or kick-in-the-seat performance, :D

driven a few panda 1.3's pretty similar experience,:(

own 2 x 1,1 panda's too, far better drive, and the 69HP 1242cc of the later cars is great, :D
BUT is still £35 Tax:rolleyes:

TBH , with my lower mileage I'm happy with the TA , it's VERY lively if driven hard:D ,but does 55+ mpg if required.(y)
however will give poor ( 30's) mpg then or in particularly hilly terrain.

it's an older car though , plenty in dealerships..
aaron500 go and drive a few..!!:)
