hi people,

need some advice, we have a 15 reg 5001.2 lounge its just gone over 1100 miles butthe best mpg we can get is 42.0mpg?????? is this right ????????

I can't personally speak for a 2015 reg 1.2, but our old 60 plate 1.2 POP, I think that used to be about average around town but on a long run, well over 50mpg was the norm.

It very much depends on how you are using the car. You can't for instance expect to be just using the car for city driving and expect a great deal more out of it than that. On a good motorway run however, it will improve.

The other thing is, the engine barely has enough miles on it yet to have fully 'bedded' in. Ok, all engines are run in on a test bench at the factory, but it will take a few thousand miles for the engine to become optimal. Don't rag the car unnecessarily, you won't do it any favours. Also, make sure you keep it serviced and don't fall into the trap of waiting until 18k or two years for its first service. I'd change the oil on the first go at around 6k miles.

I was initially worried about the mpg we were getting on our TA when we bought it, low forties, but it now seems to have settled around 47mpg on the type of everyday run my missus uses it for. We have done a few 'long distance' journeys in the car now, but it still won't go above 58mpg, though there are some dodery old snails on the forum who can eek 70 odd mpg out of their cars, but it takes them around a week to get to their destinations lol!

Hi my 14 plate 1.2 500 averages 40mpg done over 5000 miles now, the aircon is never switched off, and while it is not thrashed, its not driven with any thought for fuel economy.

I like your style lol! I know we all love to stay away from the pump, but to be honest, if one thinks all the time of fuel economy, you'd never enjoy the car. The problem is, as humans, we get sucked into this whole barage of car manufacturer claims. Sadly, imvho as an owner of a TA is concerned, the claimed mpg figures are sheer fantasy concocted under completely unrealistic conditions inside a regulated factory environment. What use is that to anyone? Certainly no use to me as an end product user.

ahmett, no disrespect, but I swap wheel sizes between both of my cars and the difference in fuel useage is negligible.
dont worry frupi i dont get offended easily.

i see a large difference between 185 and 195's. I must drive different to you! But i do notice driving at motorway speed the difference becomes much smaller as the main problem there is aerodynamics.

Since i mainly drive in start stop accelerate and slow down driving, i see a good 10% on the 185's

Lol! Yeah, I certainly wasn't looking for a fight...:p

With the wife's car, the wheel changes are from 14's to 15's and vice versa,
with my Saab 16's to 17's and vice versa. I do loads of motorway driving and the wife does an even mixture of motorway/dual carriageway/town driving.

Funnily enough I achieved an amazing result last weekend - Auckland and back (256km) at an average of 5.1L/100km - in a 1.4 Dualogic - that's 55mpg. Seems as good as can be expected in almost any 500, even a diesel!

It was so exciting when it hit 5.1, this photo was taken from the passenger's seat - hence the angle... not supposed to be upside-down though - that's just the usual southern-hemisphere image upload problem (the Busy pointer spins the other way, too ;))

I was seeing 6.4L/100km on average before I replaced the spark plugs and air filter... feels like the engine is running really well now.

The 500 I used to have rarely managed better than 7.0, so I am much happier with how this one runs.

My wife has started to get 52 mpg on our 14 plate 1.2 pop. It's got 10,000 on the clock and has started to go up since her first service last month. It has a mixture of town and good run driving as well as a mixture of low and high rev gear changes :)

Can't fault her if she's driving for economy. Personally, both I and the wife have given up driving economically. There was just no fun doing that. We just drive how we feel like it these days. The TA is achieving nearly 50mpg average and I get 600 miles per tank out of my Saab driving it in very spirited fashion!

You're quite right...no fun at all! I do tend to drive it harder and I know my wife certainly loves to surprise people when they see a little red 500 and think it's a slow coach. Sturgess of Leicester have finally started selling Abarths and the 595 is looking as much as we can afford when we come 'round to change the pop in 2 years....that will be driven in an extremely spirited fashion

We certainly won't be going down the Abarth route, more like I might end up buying a Dacia Duster diesel for zero VED and then we'll be a two car zero VED household. Just forked out yesterday, £180 for the Saab

Ok, I wont get killed in the rush here, but.....

Can I be the first to claim doddery old snail status?

Our 08 1.2 has 47,000 miles and is doing 42 mpg most of the time with town driving. Drove from Farnborough to Bournemouth and back and it showed 51 mpg i was sat at 70mph both ways.
