General 500 mpg

I visited the outside lane of the M1 once; I think it was in 1984 ;).

Lol! I can deffo beat you there jk, 160 miles done today on the M1, quite a bit of that in the outside lane  Indeed, I've travelled 700 miles on the M1 this short working week, Tuesday to today, I'm bloody sick of Catthorpe Interchange! though seeing it every working weekday, it has been interesting to see the new bridge sections going up!

show me a dealer used car warranty that does cover any of those things?

also a Used car can still have quite a lot of manufactures warranty left which covers a lot more.

Agree completely. That's the point I was trying to make.
With the Beemer, as the example above, the engine and box are covered (although not comprehensively), and they are the components that normally give least trouble.

It is not really a 'peace of mind' form of insurance, and the sad thing is, it fools a lot of punters, who get a nasty surprise when they make a claim.

Off-thread, and I apologise!

Is that the part near Leicester where you have to do 50 mph the whole time ?

That's correct, it's now a 50mph speed limit from Catthorpe all the way down to J15 (Northampton) and beyond I think. All of the central reservation is being replaced with a concrete replacement. I do that journey as part of my daily 237 mile round trip 5 days a week. I've been doing that now for 18 months! You can imagine, I have a very intimate knowledge of that whole section of the M1!

Yes I drove to Leicester from Surrey to see my brother who is studying there. Absolutely boring I tried not to fall asleep going down from 80 to 50! And I estimate it adds a good 10-15 mins to the journey going that slow

It isn't too bad, adds just 6.5 minutes each way to my journey doing a constant 50mph on cruise control. I spend most of the time in the outside lane because of the HGV's.

First you have to beat my 5yr/35,000 mile 61 mpg average ;).

I take it that is a 1.2 you have there. What was your best trip mileage. I'm going to be hypermiling 'Cinnaminta', the TA , when it arrives. Hope to get towards 70/75 mpg on a run, but 80 is my challenge. Not avg, but on a trip. Its swmbo's car really, but she'll only be doing v.short trips, and that'll bring the avg down a bit.

to do 80 you probably need to coast down a very long hill. Even if you do 40 mph the whole way in top gear i cannot see you reaching that figure.

That's exactly what hypermiling is. EVERY downhill is a free ride, coasting up to t/ lights, roundabouts etc, was getting 67 avg at one point on our round trip from Kent to Sussex yesterday in a 2000 my yaris, then hit the big accident que on m25. Only 60.2 time we got home after hours of slow moving. I'm no snail either.

i would say the fiat is less economical than the yaris = )

I'm really envious of you all. Here in the Sydney 'burbs there's always a lot of muppets who drive around at 35km/h (speed limit is typically 50) and as a result I spend much of my time running in 3rd or even 2nd gear. It's ridiculous and it destroys my fuel efficiency figures :bang:

Don't even get me started on people who ride their brakes down a hill the whole way, at half the speed limit...

well maybe you relaxxed aussies should do somethign about it. when someone is driving dangerously slowly i beep at them until they move out of the way.

Best trip mileage on a 200 mile journey was around 78mpg; that was a nice summers day with a modest tailwind. Decently long (100 miles+) out & back runs in summer will see the trip well into the '70's.

The trip is somewhat optimistic at these sort of figures; just stopping once for half an hour on a 30 mile journey will knock about 5mpg off the trip mpg. The best I've seen when measured properly is a shade under 70mpg.

That's for a 1.2. The general consensus is that, driven for best economy, the TA can't quite match the 1.2's figures, and if driven for performance, is considerably worse. It will be interesting to see what someone can achieve in a TA if they really try, but IMO the TA is not well suited to being a hypermiled car - the 1.2 is much better.

On short journeys, you'll get nowhere near the claimed figures, however carefully you try.

As you probably know, we have a 1.6 16v Clio.

She will return 50mpg on the motorway at a steady 60mph, and normally returns about 38mpg driving locally - shops and stuff.

However, since buying the 500TA, it's she who gets the trips and the Clio is relegated to Mrs Mick F driving to work and back.

We live in a very hilly area - we live on a 25% hill and she drives up it from cold of a morning, then down the other side, then up hill to work. Total distance 2miles. In the afternoon she does the return journey of course. That's 4miles a day in two separate trips. Both from cold.

18mpg when last I checked.

Regards,
Mick.

Clio.
Horrific eh?

I wonder if she took the 500TA to work, it would get much better mileage than the Clio?
I may let her borrow it!

Fuel consumption is mainly governed by work done. Pull a ton of metal up a long 25% hill it will use a certain amount of fuel. I suppose the efficiency of the engine comes into it, but work takes calories. More work done - more calories consumed.

Cruising along in a car with a good drag co-efficiant uses very little fuel, but put your foot down up a long steep hill and all the fancy smooth bodywork matters not a jot.

Regards,
Mick.

yep, but surely she coasts down the other side, therefore only driving 50% of the way.
