Last week I had my 08 Fiat 500 serviced and MOT'D - mileage is in the region of 30400. All ok - except radiator was found to be leaking and needed to be replaced. Is a replacement at this age/mileage common?

It's not common, but it's not unknown either.

Has your car had its coolant replaced regularly? Running with old or excessively diluted coolant is a common cause of radiator failure in any car (the corrosion inhibitors lose their effectiveness with age). Modern aluminium cored radiators are particularly vulnerable and running them without an inhibited coolant for even a week or two is often sufficient to ruin them.

Fortunately aftermarket replacement radiators for the 500 are cheap as chips from any of the usual factors, and replacement is a straightforward job.
