Hi guys,
On another thread, I asked how you can identify the model of 500 and was told that a TA is easy from the rear because of the lack of a visible silencer box.

I was also told that the petrol versions had a box easily seen.

Yesterday, we were behind a 500 and there was no visible box and the tail pipe was narrow and circular. It was an 11 plate.
Which one was that?

What other clues are there for EASY model identification?

Thanks,
Mick.

A TA missing its tailpipe tip?

If it had lost its tip, the pipe would not have been out very far, but the one we saw looked "normal" and extended correctly. I didn't see a silencer box.

On one 500 we saw the other day, the box was quite big and easily seen.

Cheers,
Mick.

This is a TA tail pipe.
If a TA doesn't have this "square" tail pipe, it must be that the whole rear section of the exhaust must be different.

Also, the rear vallance has a profiled rebate to take the "square" tail pipe.

Mick.

Quite possibly one with a patten replacement silencer.

"Back in the day", the three models were usually fairly easy to discern:
Pop: Steel wheels/wheel trims, black wing mirrors, plain exhaust tip with back box easily visible from behind
Sport: Rear spoiler, front fogs, unique interior
Lounge: Glass roof, body coloured wing mirrors but no front fogs, interior

Obviously there were a lot of spec changes but you could generally work it out from a combination.

Engine wise:
1.2: Powah drumz on the back axle, almost certainly present in a pop with steel wheels.
1.4: All round discs with red rings on the alloy centre caps
Dismal: Clouds of smoke out the back

for the diesel tractor noises also give it away = ) and you can always have a look at the rev counter to see where the rev limit is as the diesel's is much lower.

The Pop model doesn't have a tailpipe trim so it could have been a TA pop if such a model exists.., must check.

This! ^

When the TwinAir engine was first launched it was available on Pop, Lounge and Sport. Only for a short time, but 2011 could be feasible.

If it were a TwinAir Pop then it'd have no rear backbox visible, but wouldn't have the squared off exhaust tip of the higher spec models either, as that's trim level and not engine specific :)

The Pop model doesn't have a tailpipe trim so it could have been a TA pop...

Looking to the future, I wonder how many of the higher spec models will still have a chrome tailpiece after their first backbox/tailpipe replacement .

What other clues are there for EASY model identification?

When I was much younger I spent many fruitless hours trying to find a foolproof way of identifying an easy model, without much success.

I wonder how easy she would have been? :)

Thanks, it could have been a Pop TA.

Also, since this subject has been raised, it occurred to me as well that when our Rosa TA gets a new exhaust it may come without the shiny square tail pipe.

I looked at Rosa's yesterday and it seems the square bit is welded(?) to the tail section. I had hoped that it was clipped on, and that would have explained the 500 we saw the other day and be hope for future replacements.

Thanks guys,
Mick.

Saw another one today - Red like ours with wheels the same too.

From the rear, it had a square tailpipe like our TA, but with an oval silencer box .................. NOT like a 1.2 ............ as a 1.2 has a round silencer box.

14 plate.

Diesel?

Thanks,
Mick.
