Question Airbag light will not go off! No communication with airbag control unit?

Hi all,

Well I've fixed my central locking and boot now thanks to this forum!

But now have another issue, airbag light. Keeps coming up with airbag failure + red airbag light on the dash!

I have plugged in the latest Snap On Solus, a Bosch machine and another older Snap on machine, they can read the car fine, just can't clear the airbag light.

With the lastest Snap On Solus I can see their are no breaks in the circuit, all the components are working as they should, but it won't turn off the airbag light.

It just comes up with code U1726 and says No communication with Airbag control unit? I don't know if the Airbag ECU / control unit is faulty or not so don't just want to replace it without really knowing or is this good enough going on the log? Dealer is quoting 350.00 + for the unit alone then I guess it will need programming?

Has anyone else had this problem before or know more about it? I've looked on here for previous threads but seem to be coming up with dead ends.

Any help really appreciated as it's driving me mad, drove round to all my friends with different diagnostic machines today only to find out we couldn't turn it off, most machines read the car fine but showed no faults, despite it saying airbag failure on the dash!!

Thanks all

M

Re: Airbag light will not go off! No communication with airbag control unit?

Seems fine tbh, starts on the button but haven't checked with a multimeter. Have left for quite a few days before and always started but could be a bit old at a guess.

Don't know if previous owner ran flat. Does have 2 previous MOT's showing airbag light as an advisory so maybe ongoing issue, current MOT has no advisory but rules changed for airbag lights and can't see a failure sheet for it on current.

Hmmmm, what are you thinking re battery?

Thanks for your time

Does it clear once it's charged or do you need the dealer to reset it? I could try boosting it with jump leads maybe? Thanks 306maxi

Re: Airbag light will not go off! No communication with airbag control unit?

Was thinking I would have seen a low voltage warning as an error message when I did diagnostic test earlier so possibly not that? Will still test battery for good measure.

Hoping it doesn't need a new airbag ecu, hard to tell really but need to whittle down all the possibilities. Time consuming and a right ball ache lol

Only if below the threshold of the diagnostics device, airbag system is resistance sensitive, so slightest drop in voltage, even half a volt, can throw the resistance readings out and flag an error.

To fully read and reset the airbag system you may well need a different bit of kit, either MES (multiecuscan.net) software, or a Fiat dealers 'Examiner' unit.

My mechanics Solus snap on never works on half the airbag systems he trys to deal with, but always manage it with my MES software on our Fiats

I'm not being sarcastic when I say this, I absolutely admire your efforts to try and sort this problem and I wish you luck with it, but me, I'd have just taken it to a dealer by now and let them hook it up and sort it out or at least give me an official diagnosis I could sort out later if I wanted to, but in the case of an airbag issue, I'd want it sorted sooner, much sooner, rather than later.

Nothing like a sense of achievement doing it yourself though!

Re: Airbag light will not go off! No communication with airbag control unit?

Airbag warning lights are weird things, one of my friends has a 10 plate Audi A3 which had a persistent airbag warning light, turns out it was caused by a dodgy resistor in the heating control panel (none climate control, commoner I know!) and even after having that fixed (30p and 10 mins with a soldering iron, 200 quid wanted by Audi!), it took trying 4 different versions of Vagcom until they found the correct one to reset the light, so I say to you stick at it and you shall overcome!

Sometimes mine puts the power steering message up and I think as maxi said it's the battery as I've had same once since purchase in 2008

There is a software update for the steering light issue and low battery.

There is also a issue when it comes on upon starting without it needing a new battery. Had this done a few years ago and it's still the same battery which hasn't needed changing.
