General TomTom 2 software upgrade

Frupi - Not that often tbh, only had it 11 months and I've done it maybe 2-3 times since then. Last update was a good 2-3 months ago maybe more.

JimL - It's not a map update, its an actual system update. The last map update left me with 26mb free. MyDrive knows I have several updates (which are 2-3 mb or less) but won't install them without the main system update going on first which is 76mb, so of course fails as I don't have that much.

The software itself doesn't appear to give me any option to remove a map from the device so I can't just go back and amend the map I do have to give me more space.

Try phoning TomTom support. When it gives you the choices go for the in car system option (this is what they class the blue&me TomTom as). They were really helpful to me when I had a problem after doing this update (see my earlier post in this thread).

As I read flashyphotos link, the 500/5000 will fit, but I haven't tried it so can't say. if it fails you can remove the top part of the cradle and glue a magnet inside.

Okey kokey. So I eventually bought a TomTom GO 5000 EU model, the one that has the inbuilt sim card and is 'always connected' for Live Traffic. I bought it from my local Halfords store because last Sunday when I bought it, they were selling it for the same price as everyone else online, £227.17, though not in their stores which operate a different pricing strategy to their online sales, however they matched the online price without problem. The advantage of buying it from Halfords, was the immediacy of the purchase and the fact that if I had bought it online, it'd have been sat at our local Post Office for days waiting for us to collect.

I bought the genuine Fiat/Alfa/Lancia plug in cradle from a Fiat dealer online for £50 and that has been paid for with the £50 cashback from TomTom which has been approved already and will be paid in the next few days. The online form for claiming the £50 is so easy and convenient.

I immediately removed the top half of the cradle as it appeared that there was no way the GO 5000 was going to squeeze in the gap without causing some sort of damage to either the cradle or the docking port on the TomTom. Easy enough job to disassemble to remove the top part of the cradle and as others have done, I glued a magnet I bought from my local hardware store inside the cradle and it works absolutely fine. Took the car out for a test drive with the GO 5000 in situ and it stuck fast without a hint of being dislodged, so I'm voting it a success.

I'm glad I went to the trouble of buying the official cradle, even though it required modding, though at least I haven't filed anything off of it or caused any other damage to it and I can of course return it to its original state if need be. I like the fact the plug in cradle is so sturdy in the port and we can now just leave it in there and easily remove the TomTom when not in use.

As for the GO 5000 itself, well it is a lot bigger than I anticipated but it appears to work very well where we live, good strong signal off the Vodafone network that it apparently uses. I have noticed though, that there are frequent updates for it and I have been applying updates to it almost daily since purchase, mostly camera and community road user updates. When I first connected the satnav to my computer, it immediately updated to the latest map, which wasn't exactly a quick process! It took about an hour to update the thing but I guess that is because it has mapping for 45 odd European countries. Considering the amount of mapping/data held on the unit, it boots up within 20 seconds or so which isn't too bad.

Overall, a useful purchase for the wife and great when used with the official cradle even though we don't have any control using the steering wheel buttons.

frupi, How did you manage to dismantele the cradle? I have purchased a GO500 from Halfords for 50 quid (less 30 quid cashback).
I don't want to damage the cradle and can see no way of separating it.
Any help appreciated. Even an image of it in its two parts would be a help.

wellfan, hi, it's really quite easy once you've spotted the four rubber screw covers. I'm absolutely crap at posting pictures and stuff, so hopefully the description will be good enough.

Look very carefully at the cradle face, by that I mean hold it in front of you so you can see the docking port. You will see on the flat upright face, a very small rubber cap either side of the sticky outy plastic ridge where the back of the tomtom locates and the same again on the lower part of the cradle either side of the actual docking port that mates with the tomtom. Very carefully, prise out those rubber bungs with the tip of a precision screwdriver or knife and you will reveal four philips type screws. Carefully unscrew all four screws and you will then be able to pull the cradle apart. The upper part of the cradle that goes up and down can then be removed by carefully prising out of two springs that locate in the bottom part of the cradle.

Just be careful not to damage anything, though it is a sturdy bit of kit. (y)

Bingo. Got it. I did wonder about the wee covers. I'll give it a go now. Thanks again.

Edit. Just got it apart. Easy when you know how!! Thanks

If you have the Go 500 it fits perfectly (albeit tightly) in the Port 68R cradle without any mods. I've been using it for the past year like this.

Thanks frupi for the instructions, have been interested in removing the top for a while now!

Is the Go 5000 bigger? I always thought it's exactly the same size as the Go 500.

You must have had to give it some push to get it in without damaging it. I gave up just before it looked like something was about to go 'bang' or 'scratch'.

frupi, sorry to hassle you again. I am looking online for a suitable magnet. Trying to get one that just has enough power, without being too strong, as I know this can impact on electrical components. Can I ask where, and what type of magnet you bought.

No probs. The magnet is round, 2cm wide by 9mm depth. It fits absolutely perfectly. Just a dab of superglue holding it in place. I bought a packet containing two of the little beggars, cost £2.99 from my local hardware store.

So, I've packed 'er indoors' off for a week, she's gone away for a course to do with work. New TomTom all set up on the modified cradle, so hopefully the whole thing will be good and get her there without snags. Interestingly, the fastest route TomTom suggested from our home to where she's going, is also another 50 miles over the shortest most direct route. For the sake of an extra 3/4's of an hour and a difference of 100 miles on the round trip, she's taking the shortest route. No point in putting the extra miles on the car when there's no rush to get there.

Nice... its a good piece of kit and a value for money, my 6000 is not updating from tom tom for some reason, perhaps needs more memory, i will look into it.

Question, how much gap is there with the 5000 in the cradle and the curved dash to the right. I am wondering if the 6000 will sit in the cradle and not touch the right side. thx.

There is plenty of clearance between the cradle and the dash as the following picture posted earlier demonstrates:

Basically, this picture demonstrates what my own set up looks like, except of course I don't have the top half of the cradle because I've removed it. To be honest, I'm not exactly sure just how some of the other guys managed to squeeze the TomTom into the cradle without damaging either the unit or the cradle. I certainly wouldn't like to keep jamming it in there with the frequency of the updates, that would be an utter pain in the arris.

Thanks, the 5000 seems to be forward and I can see the gap on the right hand-side, I will order a cradle.

Software updated on the 6000, used IE instead of Chrome.

Hey that's my car :D

There's a better picture in my post which illustrates the amount of space next to the cradle:

As for jamming the TomTom Go 500 into the cradle, at first it was a tight fit but now it's loosened up and I can do it without any trouble whenever I need to do a software/map update. Maybe your one is a bit tighter than mine?

Being Italian designed and all, wouldn't surprise me if dimensional tolerances varied a fair bit ;)

Has it loosened to the extent that the unit wobbles about in the cradle?

Nope no wobble at all, the TomTom still fits snugly in the cradle, it's just loosened up ever so slightly that I no longer have to strain to pry it out :)
