General TomTom 2 software upgrade

I know Ahmett, I find the iPhone 4s and Note 3 fiddly and dreadfull for navigation, you can't beat a dedicated device.

btw: I don't like spending money for the hell of it, the purchase of 6000 is thought out, however if someone who knows better tells me TomTom are replacing the 5000/6000 series soon, then I will wait.

Cheers dude
Or you can buy a Windows Phone 8.1 device and it'll do navigation through the speakers :)

I've got a Lumia 930 myself and I'm glad I never got one of the Fiat sat navs. Not having another device is just so much easier and it works through the speakers just like a factory sat nav.

Good choice in not buying the fiat sat nav, it was overpriced albeit cleverly designed for the car.

yep, a good point, I tried iPad during the two trips to Europe and in UK iphone 4s & now note 3. iPhone screen is small and the note 3 GPS may as well not be there at times (which it isn't). These work to a certain degree but you can't beat a dedicated device, the TT6000 has free maps for life & live traffic, screen size is good and I like the fact I can type in name of a place rather than stick to postcodes - will also work all over europe. Not bad for £199 with the £50 rebate. All the family can use it and not faff about with the old tomtom and phones.

Damn you arorat! You're going to cost me money here I think!

Do it !! you know what is right :)

Did it fit in the port okay?

Wellfan, I don't have the port adaptor yet may pick one up, however I need to check the height i.e. how hight the TomTom will sit above the dash.

TomTom 6000 is just under 17cm wide. From the centre point of port 68R it seems like 8cm to the edge of the dial-dash, if the port adaptor holds the sat nav an inch higher from the base of dash it will work. I am not in any hurry and will use the wind-screen suction for now.

btw: should be no issues with TomTom 5000 (this also has £50 rebate).

It's a pity flashyphotos' photos were deleted, as they illustrated everything perfectly:

In summary: Tom Tom Go 5000/500 fit fine (very tight & snugly) in the Port 68R cradle. The Go 6000/600 only fit if you cut off the top half of the cradle -- actually you can do it without cutting, I believe, but I haven't tried to remove the top half yet.

Makes sense.

In fact go with the 5000 if using a cradle and 6000 if using the screen to hold it.

I like the fact a sim is built in and it will navigate to a location anywhere in Europe. Just tried "Islantilla G" and up pops Islanitlla Golf, great for the next trip. No more fighting with the Mrs when wrong turns are dished out :) Small thing eh !!

So, if I've read everything correctly, the GO 5000 fits perfectly into the port 68R using this cradle?:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alfa-Rome...S_Accessories_Software_ET&hash=item35d313bf08

If that is indeed the case, I have no issue buying the cradle, even for 50 quid if it works with the 5000 without any issues/modifications.

As I read flashyphotos link, the 500/5000 will fit, but I haven't tried it so can't say. if it fails you can remove the top part of the cradle and glue a magnet inside.

Mmm, I'm trawling the www. as we speak to see if anyone has actually bought the official Fiat cradle and has it working with a TomTom satnav other than its official partnership with Fiat/Alfa. I have no desire to start messing about with any modifications.

Well now having examined the dimensions of the TomTom 2 agains the GO 5000, the differences are:

http://www.tomtom.com/en_us/product...avigation/blueme-tomtom-2/#tab:specifications

https://tomtom.com/en_gb/products/y.../go-series/go-5000-europe/#tab:specifications

I'm a bit rubbish at maths, but looking at the physical dimensions of both units, there appears to be fractions of mm involved in both height/depth.

Anyone out there care to have a good guess as to whether the port 68r cradle will fit ok on the 5000 looking at the dimensions?

I'm using this cradle with the Go 500, and the Go 5000 is identical except it has the 2G live traffic thing built-in. So yes it'll work.

Here's my photos in the flashyphotos thread:

The fit of the Go 500 is very tight though. Took me a while to get used to taking it out and putting it in the Port 68R cradle. It gets a little bit looser over time. I generally remove the entire cradle + Go 500 whenever I leave my car. The only time I take the Go 500 out of the cradle is when I need to run a software/map update (since the micro USB socket at the bottom of the Go 500 is obscured by the cradle).

If this bothers you, you can remove the top half of the cradle, as flashyphotos did. You can then leave the cradle mounted in the socket in your car, and just insert/remove your TomTom unit easily with no fuss.

The tight fit clearly then explains the 1mm difference in the height between the two units. My plan would be to leave the unit permanently attached to the cradle and just throw the entire unit in the boot when not in use (obviously removing it from the car at night!)

I'm leaning very heavily now toward the GO5000. I notice Amazon are selling it for £227 odd and the offer of the £50 cashback is still there with it. I was going to ask John Lewis if they'll price match, but we're only talking a tenner in price difference and with JL, you do have the added 'insurance' of a two year warranty over a standard one year. With the 50 quid saving, I could buy the cradle.

Some might well now ask, if going to that sort of effort, why not just buy the TomTom 2 for the Fiat? Trouble with that is, no free map updates or live traffic so I believe? The total cost will actually be roughly the same going the Go5000 route and buying the cradle as opposed to the TomTom 2, which can be had for around £240.

So my next question is, using the Go500/5000 with the port 68R cradle, do you have steering wheel button functionality or any other functionality/benefits, or has this already been covered and I've missed it?

It's been covered before but I can't remember which threads. The Port 68R cradle provides only power, and nothing else. No bluetooth or iPhone/Blue&Me or whatnot functionality. Speech and sound comes directly from the TomTom unit, not via the car's speakers.

AFAIK the original FIAT/Alfa TomTom unit gives you some extra in-car functionality and integration via bluetooth. But from the reviews I've read, the original branded TomTom unit is so slow that it's simply not worth getting. The new TomTom Go series is superior.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I got the TT 2 Live with my 500 and have updated it previously with an updated Map and speed camera patch but after seeing this thought I'd go check to see if there was an update for mine too.

There is, but its 76mb, and there is a 2mb Speed Cam update as well, however I've only got 26mb free on the device and there is no mem-card slot or anything on it, so I'm kinda stuck with a device I can't currently update.

Does anyone have any experience with these things in regards to how to adjust the installed map pack so its a smaller variant? I don't need all of Europe tbh, just the UK.

DBunX,

How often do you connect your device to TomTom My Drive application for updating?

I have a Topgear edition which I connect to my desktop every couple of days for speed camera updates and GPS updates because I use it every day in my job as a driver. In the My Drive app, you should be able to manage your device from there and delete maps etc you dont' want/need, but you should make a back up before you start deleting anything:

When you update the map it will know there is not enough space. It should give you an option to download just a part of the map. It splits these into zones, so you just pick the zone you want.

Frupi - Not that often tbh, only had it 11 months and I've done it maybe 2-3 times since then. Last update was a good 2-3 months ago maybe more.

JimL - It's not a map update, its an actual system update. The last map update left me with 26mb free. MyDrive knows I have several updates (which are 2-3 mb or less) but won't install them without the main system update going on first which is 76mb, so of course fails as I don't have that much.
The software itself doesn't appear to give me any option to remove a map from the device so I can't just go back and amend the map I do have to give me more space.
