Hi all,

Firstly I must say how impressed I am at how active and friendly the forum is.

I've just joined today, in total honesty because I'm pulling my hair out with an EM (engine management) issue on my 2009 500 1.2 Pop.

On delivery from new, I had it back in to the dealership as I new it had an occassional misfire, most notably downhill. I was repeatedly told it was a normal characteristic of the model and ECU setup. As soon as the 3 year warranty ran out, I noticed a drop in fuel economy from 60mpg to around 54mpg which was investigated but no cause found. Then the EM light started flashing, intermittently and briefly. It has continued to do this now for nearly 2 years and I've lost count of the number of times the car has been in for investigations. Nearly always, no fault can be found, no codes are stored, and the fault cannot be replicated on roadtest. The only codes I have seen are p3000, p3002, p3003 (general misfire, cyl2 misfire and cyl3 misfire), but these codes only stay in memory until the ignition is turned off. This means when I see the light, I have to drive to my garage and leave the engine running !!!

I see this flashing EM light around 3 times a day, although rarely for more than 10 seconds a time. It nearly always occurs at between 2900 and 3300 revs, with a warm engine, typically about 30 to 40 minutes into a motorway drive. I have had two or three coil packs, numerous sets of plugs and leads and a backbox replacement for the exhaust which rotted out within 10 months from new. Cylinder compressions are even and within range. Recent investigation of a rattle, did reveal an air intake hose which had sheared off from its mounting lug, causing the hose to work its way out of the radiator cowling and partly block itself against bodywork. I have fixed this and seen a return to 60mpg economy and better engine response. The flashing EM warning light also went away for 3 days of driving some 400 miles, but now it's back again, about once a day, again free revving at between 2800 and 3500rpm.

My next plans are to change the crank position sensor (due to fault triggering at such specific engine speeds), then an ECU off car test / repair / remap, then it'll have to be lambda sensors and cat but I hate spending money without a diagnosis.

Any thoughts????

Could it actually be a random fault with the warning light?
