Hi everyone

Just bought a Twinair lounge 2011 from a main dealer, brilliant car but start&stop doesn't work.

The handbook states the engine needs to be warm, battery OK, heated window and wipers off, doors shut, climate off, belts on but still doesn't work.

The system failure symbol is not lit.

Am I missing something?

thanks will do, the dealer should have checked the battery as per the pre-delivery check sheet

that's the plan..!!, - another sign of a good dealer..!!, ;)

let us know how you get on..,

out of interest have you actually driven it on a long run yet,
mine always works well after 2+ hours of motorway driving..!!

then tails off on the daily commute :(

PDI refers to 'pre-delivery inspection' i.e. a new car, the car in question is a secondhand 2011 model therefore the car will of had a basic check. If it has had a recent Fiat service then the battery will of been checked for 'condition' however a stop/start battery might be showing to be in good condition yet the voltage isn't sufficiently high enough and stable to operate the stop/start.

Charge the battery with a pulse charge as per specifications, there might also be a software update for you chassis.

.....there might also be a software update for you chassis.

Surely, if there does happen to be a software update for the car, then if the dealer is any good, they would have/should have...(laughing to myself hysterically here) have checked the car diagnostically before selling it?

Some caution should be exercised here also, when our old POP (2011 model) went in for a 'software' check/update, it was found to have a faulty steering motor, which was news to me. Fiat replaced it though on warranty.

And I would recommend to the OP to buy a CTEK charger. Excellent bit of kit which I have used often to top up the batteries on my own cars, especially if they've been stood a week or two.

Should, could, would ... The less time a dealer invests in your car the easier and cheaper it is for the dealership - as others have suggested take it back for a check-up

Had our 500 for almost two years, S&S has never really worked. We occasionally get a glimmer of life, then it dies again. Cannot be arsed with the hassle of taking it to the dealer again, and again, and again, to maybe getting it fixed. My attitude is that it is a Fiat and just be happy that it gets you from A to B. Anything else is a bonus!!!

thank you, I would have though under the used fiat scheme usedcars.fiat.co.uk this all would have been checked inc the battery being topped up. I have a ctek but I have just picked up this car. I have spoken the stealer and will book it in next week with them.

Isn't that why it's called start/stop?
Sometimes it starts sometimes it stops...

S/S won't work unless you drive fairly long distances daily, about 30km. Park it for a day and you'll have to do about 60km before it works.

There's a wide safety margin buit in so as not to die in traffic. S/S really needs to be combined with a roof mounted solar panel

I know they're a premium brand but I don't understand how the BMW cars I drive "just work" when it comes to stop start & Fiat have no clue.

mine does WORK , (15 mile each way commute helps)

but when it kills the engine, only to start it again after 10 seconds idle..,:bang:

I'm just left thinking.. that's doing more harm than good
( wear + tear on starter, etc)

of course as others have said..it wouldn't be TAX free without it,

I've only ever driven 1 beemer = hated it :yuck:

brother in law just bought an "approved one",

broke within a week, took 3 weeks for BMW UK to fix,

think I'll stick with what actually works,;)

My TA does the same, after 8 trips to dealership still restarts safer 3-15 seconds, seems to perform as it should in warmer weather!

Can't be bothered to waste any more time with dealership, who to be fair have been very good trying to fix, but Fiat have failed them and me.

I think it's a TA thing linked to auto climate control and l the smart alternator

Likewise with Peugeot. I drive a Peugeot Partner van for work that has start/stop and it works every single time without the slightest issue, whereas even on our new TA, it's hit and miss.

It just works on the two 500's have had to use. So doubt the there arnt issues with SS for other manufactures vehicles just like Fiat.

Well after a longer run yesterday IT WORKED!

I think FIAT need to explain in more detail when it wont work, ie exact temp of engine or outside, maybe a battery% indicator etc etc

Well, there was a full moon last night, which might have helped. :)

My own S/S never kicks in any more, but I actually prefer it that way.
