Technical Fiat 500 new battery?

Costco stock bosch batteries, I've got the right battery sitting in my kitchen but I'm in North Wales

Here's the guilty party causing all this hassle.

If they have a tyre fitting centre they should have a battery selection also, just remember you need to be a member though

Any idea which Varta battery to use.

Spent ages at work this afternoon dodging the boss, while I phoned motor factors in Leeds trying to get hold of a Bosch S5. Leeds seems to be a Bosch free zone.

These are all official bosch service centers in leeds. Ring them, surely they have bosch batteries = )

I bought my battery from a bosch car service dealer, they may be slightly more expensive than online dealers, but its always nice to speak to a knowledgable Bosch engineer, who impressed me so much with their knowledge and the amount of spare parts that bosch make for the Fiat 500, that I will go there for my next service and wish I had done so from the first service!

I confirm. Yes they do have Bosch batteries at Costco in Leeds if you have a card (Costco member living in Leeds).

You have a car battery sitting in your kitchen? Blimey. You have the perfect wife! Mine wouldn't allow that sort of carry on in "her" kitchen.

Kudos mate,

Thanks for that. I'm travelling to Leeds tomorrow to do the deed. I'll definitely be using those numbers. I'm running out of patience hoping I'd get the cheapest deal. What am I thinking, this is my precious only daughter, money's no object (within reason).

Probably too late to seek out Costco card but thanks for the heads up.

Love the idea of a car battery in the kitchen, nestled between the toaster and the George Foreman grill. It's what every home needs, especially in a power cut.:)

My pleasure, from personal experience official bosch dealers are strictly controlled and trained by Bosch themselves so they won't or shouldn't at least rip you off. The Bosch battery I bought at the Bosch Service Center was like 10-15 euros more expensive than I could find online, which really isn't that much.

I bought the Bosch S5 battery (the spec i sent you) for 85 Euros. I'll take a picture of it in 15 minutes when I will drive so you are sure its exactly the same spec.

Sorry pic not so good it is very dark in the garage but it is clearly the s5002 model and it fits just fine. ImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1380831809.009316.jpg

Hehe, it's in a corner, she is quite an understanding woman though.....

Did you get this sorted? Is she now okay? Who supplied the battery? Recommend?

Probably the joy of not really having to do anything made me forget to post a conclusion to this story.

I went to Troy Autopoint in Halton (it's a Bosch service centre) on the edge of Leeds. I explained what was wrong, and the guy there looked up which Bosch battery I needed. I can't remember which Bosch battery he said I needed (yes I know I should have done, as that was the whole point of going, sorry my fault here), but it wasn't that one that ahmett mentioned. I said what about an S5, and asked him to look on the forum website. He looked at it and said "you don't want to believe what some guy on a forum says. The best thing to do is get the car here". I told him I had a jump starter and he said, "it should start first time with that".

I went to the car with the starter, and lo and behold it started first turn. My daughter then followed me back to Troy Autopoint. The guy brought out his battery tester, and said "there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with this battery, according to this it's got an 80% charge level. I can sell you a battery if you want, but I don't think it needs one". I told him we were driving 80 miles back to Grimsby and he said "that should charge it up".

Since getting back the car has started and performed perfectly OK. I wish could remember which battery he reckoned I needed, but I will phone a service centre and get the info for possible future reference.

I've taken a photo of the current battery in use for everyone else's benefit, plus I measured the tray and the battery.

The current battery is 175Wx160Dx189H. The battery tray looks like the maximum size of 220Wx200D. The height doesn't look too critical, as there's plenty of clearance. Whether the leads would reach if you had a really tall battery I don't know.

The car's in Grimsby all week, so before my daughter goes back to Leeds I might take it to a service centre and ask them to test the charge again.

Thanks to everybody who provided some help for me on this forum. I will be definitely be using the forum again, as my son's just bought an 03 Punto, and I need to know about cambelt replacing.

Best wishes & good luck to everyone.(y)

That's good news.
Should the battery ever need replacing, replace it with the Bosch S5002. I believe its the best battery money can buy that can fit into a non ss Fiat 500.
Regarding don't listen to what some forum guy says, fair enough but I have the Bosch S5002 in my car as we speak so its 100% sure it fits the car = )
In the Bosch service center they said sure we can sell you a battery 20 euros cheaper (the S4 smaller battery for the Fiat 500), but i think its best if we fit the biggest battery we can fit in your car, the difference of 20 euros really isnt that much especially when you drive your car so much in town (75,000 km in 3 years in town driving).

Not completely true, it all depends on what the alternator can charge.
If you fit the largest battery that will fit, it is very well possible the alternator has a very hard job to fully charge it, and in winter, what a lot of electric sources working, it is not uncommon that the alternator NEVER charges the battery to it's full level, thus shortening the lifespan of the battery considerably.
Stay with what the car factory, or battery factory indicates is the best you can do for your car and the lifespan of the battery.
I never fit a battery with more than 10% extra Ah, than stock.

If you've got a decent smart charger it's fine to fit a slightly larger battery. I've got a Bosch S5 001 which is a 52ah battery as opposed to the standard 40, my car had no real trouble keeping it charged, I charged it on my Ctek before it went in and when I took it out a month or so later, it needed the tiniest charge to bring it back up to full charge. It's going to go back in this week sometime and I'll give the original battery a reconditioning charge to prepare it for the winter.
