I got a new 500s at the start of the year, a 13 plate. Its been a mixture of city driving short motorway drives. Is this a good average MPG after about 4k miles? I keep reading about higher MPGs for 500 models through a range of models and years. Mines is a 1.2 500s 13 plate so would like to know your thoughts please?..

It all depends on your driving style as to what MPG your going to get, plus the terrain you drive over. I live in the Chilterns and am up and down hills all day. If I drive like a saint then 50+mpg is achievable, however as the fuely in my SIG testifies I am prone to a bit of fun driving and get close to what your getting. I have a 500 twinair. The trick to getting high mpg is smoothness, so no heavy braking or acceleration, all achievable in the 500 but tiring as you do need to be FULLY aware of what's going on around you at all times.

I can get that with my AGP normal driving, so i think once its bedded in youll get a lot more out of it

I got about 42 out of my mk2 Punto fire engine. My 63 plate panda 1.2 is saying 49 on the computer but not emptied and brimmed to check yet.

I'd say your mpg is perfectly acceptable.

As scout says, it's all down to your area of driving, and how you drive too.

The other day as I drove along a dual carriageway, the lights 300 metres away just turned red, I got off the gas. The car behind starts getting irate as I'm delaying him. As a gap appears he pulls into the left lane and blasts past giving me the :tosser: sign only to slam on the anchors for the red light.
I got out with my lump hammer and smashed his screen ( that bit only happened in my head )
Anyway, techniques like these will see your mpg go up.
The more you use your brakes the higher the fuel consumption. :)

I picked up my 500S Twinair a week ago and have just had to fill up for the second time. the first tank I got spot on 50mpg which I'm chuffed about. Most of this was driving to work all week sat on a dual carriageway at 70.

My 2011 1.2 averages at 46mpg, and like you my 500 has a mixture of motorway and city journeys. thought it would do better but again as previously mentioned, it's how you drive it and being aware of how you drive it. Loving being part of the 500 clan though!

It's bloody good for a petrol isn't it and that's why I couldn't justify buying anything other than the 1.2

Yeah it's good, it's just not doing what everyone raves about it should be doing but I'm still happy with it, plus I'm used to driving diesels so was getting more. It's all about the adjustment I suppose. I'm only now just remembering to use the start/stop system.

46 isn't good for a petrol!

I've averaged 50mpg over the life of my car and at the moment I'm averaging more like 60......

I think the real mpg figures on honestjohn give an average of 48.8mpg for the 1.2. This is just an average and as 306maxi has shown, official mpg figures can be achieved.

Letting of some steam by a spirited drive every now and then might reduce your mpg, but may also mellow your comments. To be honest I'd rather not see your spirited comments disappear, so keep up the excellent mpg.
Do you find honestjohn crap because it doesn't seem to support your belief that the 1.2 is much better on petrol than the twin air? (It is a bit better)
To be honest I am not a big fan of that site either.

No, it's just lightweight motoring journalism. How he landed a job for a big paper and has such a following I will never know.
