Technical Fiat 500 Start Stop System

I’m a bit like a dog with a bone!

I can appreciate that. When I had S/S battery problems with my (then) new car I was told "Don't worry about it, it's not much use anyway". But my attitude was it's fitted to my car, I paid for it, so I expect it to work!

It will be interesting to see if the new earth strap sorts it.

I’ll let you know once I’ve fitted the new one hopefully Friday
It’s so funny I didn’t even know the car had it [emoji38]but once I did it’s niggled me ever since!
Just like my heated mirrors (fixed now) didn’t know I had em!

Honestly tho you should see my current earth strap ... it’s in a right old state! Green as a cucumber ?[emoji23]

I didn't know mine had it either; nor heated mirrors, nor climate control, nor half a dozen other things. I bought it 'on sight' without the usual long research I put into buying all my Mazda's. Fortunately I haven't had cause to regret it. It was the last of a limited "Twinair" badged model with leather, but I grabbed it because it was the last available manual Lounge and I loved the interior.

I'd like to see a pic of the old strap because I have no idea where to find it or what it looks like.

SS Is perfect for urban driving, however urban only driving is the last thing SS needs to work correctly, what you need is at least half an hour motorway driving followed by your urban driving every day.

Thanks John
It can surprise me sometimes if I’ve done a few more miles & SS kicks in but it’s so erratic [emoji19] when I charged my battery last the SS was a no show & disappeared for a good 4 days despite doing a few more miles than usual
Looking at my main “fat” earth strap that sits under my clutch slave & seeing how green & corroded it is made me think!
So I’ll be swapping that over Friday ... can I smear it in petroleum jelly before I fit it?

John; I'm sure you're right but mine only does urban driving and the S/S works faultlessly all the time! I'm guessing that's at least partly down to climate.

You could but it may melt off in the hot engine bay assuming you bought a braided strap, I bought a plastic covered one for about £4 (Think jump lead type cable) 250mm long 8mm holes at each end, so will out last the car, the braided ones suffer due to the saltly water thrown up. Note you have to remove the slave cylinder to get to the nut, DONT let the piston(on a spring inside) push out as air might get in, I jammed it against the engine to stop ours popping out, but could easily slip?

I managed to snag a newer but essentially same one as removing but (no corrosion) it’s wrapped in the same rubber I may nip to Halfords to see if they have grease stuff do you know of any?

I have a big tub of copper grease? Or regular grease?

Yeah slave cylinder... that’s the only bit I’m worried about [emoji38] so when I remove the slave I have to keep the spring from popping out?

It's the slave piston rod you need to keep in the spring is internal this pic shows my new one when it arrived with its keeper in place
