Ive got a 3 month old 500 sport. Its done about 1500 miles and in that time i can count the amount of times the start/stops worked on one hand.......for me.

The reason i say that is when i drove it to the fiat garage to get them to check it out, the tech guy drove it round the corner and it worked. I got in (engine still running) drove it 50ft, guess what, didn't work. He got back in, drove it 50ft and it worked. We did this another couple of times and eventually it worked for me. He watched the way i was driving and couldn't see why.

Anyway, whether i drive 10 miles or 100, i still cant get it to work. They've checked the battery and everything's fine. Then, to add insult to injury, my partner took it round the block with me in it and worked first time.

Ive read the manual, i comply with everything thats asked.

Does anyone have any idea why it doesn't seem to work for me, but does instantly with others ?

Are you resting your hand on the gearstick or resting your foot on the clutch or holding down the brake pedal?

Im very aware that my foots totally off the clutch, and the same with the brake.

My hands almost definitely on the gearstick, but just resting there, waiting to engage.

Really ? That simple. I'll give it a go tomorrow and report back. Thanks for suggestion.

The S/S system needs the correct signal from the neutral position indicator to work properly.

Even lightly resting your hand on the gear lever could be enough for the sensor to incorrectly show the car as still being in gear, which will inhibit S/S operation.

Let us know how you get on today.

Well I must admit, I was a touch sceptical about the gear lever suggestion.

Just driven my usual 4 miles to work, which its never worked on, but I put that down to battery not getting fully charged. Guess what....worked twice.

Im sure its not a fluke, just can't believe resting my hand there gently sends signals back to the sensor.

Thanks to both for helping !!!!!!

Fantastic :) Thanks for listening to our suggestions, sometimes when people suggest something as silly sounding as not resting your hand on the gear stick, people fly into a rage about how this was never a problem with their old car and so on, you had an open mind and that's great.

I much prefer people like the OP in this thread who take people's suggestions seriously and give it a go :)

Sure I don't exactly cry when someone goes on like a fool, but I'd rather people just listened and respected the fact that people take time to respond and try to help :)

Know what you mean. Gets to a point I give up helping if they won't listen be it on here or face to face ;-)

If I'm not on here I will argue the toss if I know I'm right especially face to face its no fun been a "gray man" as its fun to see the cogs wirring and the face going red it's really funny arguing the toss with someone who thinks they are right when you know they are wrong :D

but since I'm a mod I have to behave and lead by example

The start stop is a finicky system as with the hand on the shift knob other things can affect its operation (as you know) I'd advise the op to have a look st the handbook there is a list of things and situations where the ss won't work :)
