Technical daytime running lights

I liked this post but wish I could like more than once as one of my pet soap boxes is "If its dark enough to warrent using lights then it should be dipped beam because if the moron with the side (parking) lights on is in front of a car with headlights on then they become invisable" and don't get me started on driving in fog with no lights or side lights only. One thing I love about the 500 is that when you turn on the lights you have no option, its dipped beam or nothing.

I also like how the current Polo (except blue motion model) goes one further & has dipped beams (inc tail lights & number plate lights) on 24/7 even when the headlights are set to position '0'.

I love that about the 500 as well.

Some people with single digit IQ's will argue that this leaves the back of the car unlit if you've only got DRL's on and they're bright enough to make the car visible. What they don't realise is that if you've got 2 cars on a b road, 1 doing 50 and the other doing 60, that the closing speed if the cars are heading towards each other is 110mph and if the faster car is chasing the slower car? 10mph, that's why the front of your car needs to be lit up more brightly than the rear.

With the 500 in the summer months I'll happily just run around with DRL's on during the day when it's sunny and tbh even if it's a bit overcast, obviously around dusk the dipped beams go on. In the winter its dipped beams all the time, you never know just how plastered with crap the front of your car can be when you live in a semi rural area like we do.

Now I'm not 100% keen on this for one reason.

You're driving along a b road on a nice sunny day and there's a car in front with its tail lights lit up, he brakes all of a sudden, if he didn't have his tail lights lit up then you'd see the brake lights that bit quicker IMHO.

I think in some cases there is an argument that less light can be better, but obviously more light is far better than no light or feck all light (parking lights)

Yes, there's a button on the dash to switch the light off, you've already pressed it once, press it again.

Touché - well done ....................... LOFALMAO

BTW still got the same problem ................... Either stop/start OR the idiot light

Yes, S/S would be a PITA in a Dualogic, I suggest disconnecting and reconnecting the negative lead and IBS connector (no tools needed, just unplug them). Because you normally have to follow a specific connection procedure to initiallise S/S, it should prevent S/S working from that point on and without the indicator light. If at a later date you want to get it working again, just follow the correct procedure.

Thanks UFI
might give that a go on the weekend

Are there any other problems or gremlins that I could unleash if I disconnect and reconnect the earth lead ??

thanks in advance

Isn't that the reason for the third brake light?

It is, but the brakes are still more visible if you goo from no lights to a Christmas tree. That said it's nowhere near as bad as idiots driving around with just parking lights or no lights at all.....

This thread seems to be populated either by those with S/S that doesn't work, but wish it did, and those with S/S which works, but wish it didn't.

Oops posted this in the wrong thread - b****y smartphone.

I will shortly be moving from the "don't have S/S" side to the "do have S/S side" come September. I'm slightly nervous....

OH NO!!!!! If S&S doesn't work then the scariest thing is going to happen to your car! The engine will perform exactly the same as your current car!

I simply don't get why people get so worked up about S&S, yes I want my car to work 100%, but if S&S doesn't work, then the car performs as cars have always done.

I would have to agree. Our S&S has really never worked in over 14 months of ownership. I cannot be arsed taking the car back and forwards to the dealer. I'll give them a go at getting it to work when I take it in for its service next March, just before end of second year so full warranty covers it.

Certain members of the PJ Steering Committee do not like to see warning lights illuminated on dashboards and expect things to be "just so". They also expect someone else (the person to whom I refer by use of the perpendicular pronoun) to then get it sorted....

Makes you smile doesn't it
Maybe we complain too much, although saying that I'm one who wishes I could switch it off - sigh

maybe not
Think the thread got hijacked
Well at least a bit - sorry it was me

Ahmett
Was it factory fitted and now disabled or not fitted
If #1 - how did you disable it or do you have the annoying idiot light all the time ?
Wasnt an option in Greece at the time in 2010 a shame because i felt i needed it with so much traffic. There again with everyone complaining so much about it i told myself maybe its better i dont have it = )

Mind you in less than 3 years of owning the car the battery has already given up under mee completely once with no hope of charge but the dealer fixed it under warranty. So all batteries are a made in china joke and can fail but the SS battery is crazy expenisve in comparison to the normal one!

Earth and the little IBS connector next to it, that's the important one. Earth first, then IBS, reconnect in reverse. Have your radio code handy if you have the stock unit. I've been doing it regularly with no ill effects, even mid way through journeys.

It's guaranteed to kill S/S with no warning lights, however, it may eventually come back.

Would black masking tape be an option?
