Hi guys when i turn on engine when it is cold and press the throttle in gear to get moving i hear a squealing noise. It only happens upon acceleration from standstill and when engine is completely cold.

Can this be the drive belt?

Yep. A cold engine which has just been started briefly places a high load on the alternator; if the drive belt is not correctly adjusted it will slip, causing the squeal you describe.

I quite often hear this on other people's cars when pulling out of parking places - usually the driver is oblivious to the racket. Makes me want to take their car away until they learn how to look after it.

So should i get it replaced then? Its at 70,000 kms / 2.5 years old.

At that mileage, I'd replace it. If it's been squealing for any length of time, it'll likely be ruined anyway.

Yes with my driving style i think its best to get it replaced. Will get around to it as i plan on driving a lot in the summer at high speeds. Will post pictures to you guys on its condition to see how a stock drive belt lasts 70,000 km of hard/city driving.

A slightly blowing manifold can also make a squeal noise when cold and stop when warm. It's common on the old Fiat Coupe. It is more likely to be drive belt tho.

Yup, at least on old cars it would cause the power steering to be heavy when pulling off from a stop.

Yeah it only happens if i havent used the car for at least a day so when engine is ice cold. Otherwise it doesnt happen.

I mean since i plan on keeping the car longterm maybe i should just change it for peace of mind.

Do it now. The more it slips, the more it will polish the pulleys. Then the new one will also slip, until you replace the pulleys. Cleaning up the surfaces is difficult, as they need to be grippy, but not rough. "A stitch in time..."
