Tuning Performance Tyres - need your advice / experiences

not a case here but never ceases to amaze me the amount of times i see people talking about not putting known makes of performance tyres on their hot hatches forgetting these are the only thing that should in theory be in contact with the ground

recently i've found speed ratings to be a but of a nightmare on my other car as is the case here, in reality insurers are also picking up on this when more road/track stuff is fitted

i think the stock Bridgestones are a bit to hard in terms of compound for my taste and don't have some of the compliance of other brands.

Michelin SP3s or Goodyear Eagle F1s are always up there for me and I am running a set of of Yokahama Advan V103s at the moment as couldn't get A08s in the right load rating

i wouldn't go to the enth degree on the 500 though

I would not recommend the Goodyear Eagle F1's on the ground that they are the worst tire I have ever seen during the winter. They are too dry weather oriented, even though in the dry I think very few tires can match its grip. On the road you need a more allround tire. I find the Mitch Pilots a bit better in that regard, if you aren't changing into winter tires during the winter.

Ahmet, I have winter tyres. 185 55 15 can be a problem size to get hold of from some some brands.
Michelins are £££ here but I do accept that they are good.

The EU tyre label data is from the manufacturer, Toyo.
Presumably there’s an argument that Toyo have got their EU labels wrong?
And are deliberately or negligently understating the T1R?
What about the Japan (JATMA) labels – are they wrong as well?

maybe they haven't come over here and tested them, they are like glue though. they maybe an unknow tyre to some who don't know much but many of them that do know them swear by them, seems only jason has tried them on a 500 and he drives his car like he stole it.

Yes that's why I don't bother with the 185/55/15's get 195/50/15's they are in the V speed rating and 82 load rating so no problems there.

I would have gotten them but I can't find them for cheap in Greece.

Are 195 ok on standard rim 15" rim width? Is it 6.5"?

Rim width | Minimum tyre width |Ideal tyre width |Maximum tyre width
5,0 Inches |155 mm |165 or 175 mm |185 mm
5,5 Inches |165 mm |175 or 185 mm |195 mm
6,0 Inches |185 mm |195 or 205 mm |215 mm
7,0 Inches |195 mm |205 or 215 mm |225 mm
7,5 Inches | 205 mm |215 or 225 mm |235 mm
8,0 Inches |215 mm |225 or 235 mm |245 mm
8,5 Inches |225 mm |235 or 245 mm |255 mm
9,0 Inches |235 mm |245 or 255 mm |265 mm
9,5 Inches |245 mm |255 or 265 mm |275 mm
10,0 Inches |255 mm |265 or 275 mm |285 mm
10,5 Inches |265 mm |275 or 285 mm |295 mm
11,0 Inches |275 mm |285 or 295 mm |305 mm
11,5 Inches |285 mm |295 or 305 mm |315 mm
12,0 Inches |295 mm |305 or 315 mm |325 mm

From memory the width of the 15 inch rim is 6J (I think I say 5.5J on a previous post). The 16 inch is 6.5J. When I looked at getting a cheaper winter 60 profile for a 15 inch rim my insurance company (one direct) stated that I could not stray outside the sizes in the handbook. If you plan to fit 195/50 R15 it might be worthwhile having someone check if it's allowed. On the MiTo 215/45 R17 and 205/45 R17 are specified in the handbook and a number that have opted for the smaller tyre save around 1kg in weight. A performance tyre can also refer to a lighter carcass so that should be factored in with better acceleration particularly on a TA.

Thanks, I will bear that in mind.

?? Surely the 1.2?

If I had a 1.2 I would be thinking in terms of the newer breed of eco tyres and would not be considering a performance tyre like a RE050 or a Pilot. If Fiat opted for a solid disc in preference to a vented disc like on the 1.4 they were looking to save on weight.

Weight isn't the reason solid discs are fitted. It's that the required thermal mass and cooling is enough for the car, and they're cheaper than vented.

On another thread brake fade on the solid discs of the TA was an issue.

Thanks for quoting my own thread back at me.

I repeat, the thermal mass of the solid discs was deemed to be enough given normal driving circumstances. And they are, the only time I've got my brakes to fade is when pushing the car very hard. 1.2 brakes are smaller, and the car is 80Kgs lighter than the TA.

I thought 1.4 and TA were same performance? If that is the case maybe there is a weight saving measure here.
