Hi,

I have a 2011 twinair convertible and up to now have had absolutely no problems with it. Last Saturday when I went to start it after it had been parked up for the week I had trouble getting it into first & reverse gears. Once I'd driven it for a while the problem disappeared and when I drove it last Sunday there were no problems - it was engaging all gears normally.

Just got into it this morning and I am unable to engage any gears at all. The clutch feels exactly the same as normal, and the gearstick moves slightly from side to side, but it will not shift into any gear. Any suggestions as to what the problem is?

Thanks,

Lou

Get it into the dealers. Could be a number of,things but it needs to go into the dealer for diagnosis.

I'm going to give them a call on Monday, just wondered if anyone here has had the same problem and if so, what caused it.

Yes, you need to go to the dealer without delay.
If I was guessing, I would say that the clutch plates are not releasing. Had a similar issue on a car a while back.

I understand the desire to find out what's wrong, but it could be a number of things and the dealer will look for themselves anyway. I know we always want to know what could be wrong, but you won't find out for sure till you go into the dealership and they find the faulty component.

Hi Lou, have you tried to see if it will select gears without the engine being switched on, which would point to a clutch and/or hydraulics problem. However, if still the same then cables or selector mechanism would seem to be the most likely cause.

Tried it again this morning and the weird thing is it was back to normal again, with all gears selecting fine, although the clutch pedal did seem a little lower than usual. Don't understand how it would have fixed itself overnight  Anyway will still book it into the dealer tomorrow (annual service is also due) but at least it looks as though I'll be able to drive it the short way there rather than have to arrange a tow truck (unless the problem happens again in the meantime!). Thanks for your replies and I'll keep you posted with the diagnosis.

Hi, im having the same problem..in february this year i wasnt able to get into first or reverse gears at all, it was almost as if the clutch pedal wasnt down enough. I have a fiat fiat twinair 0.9l lounge for reference, new in march 12, and it was apparently a faulty clutch cylinder that wasnt engaging. 2 months later and im having the same problem but of course now my AA cover as run out and they are expecting me to pay to have it towed there myself?? im really not happy about this. The fiat garage were useless on the phone and basically fobbed me off and said il have to wait to monday. I cant believe this has happened again! Does anyone know if this is a common fault?? im worried that all the grinding on the gears has caused damage to the gearbox now.

You have a return to base warranty on the car, Fiat are not responsible for towing it. Unfortunately them's the brakes. It's not a common issue either.
