After much consideration I have just had a Remus race tube and back box fitted to my 2008 1.4 Sport. I had wanted the silenced front section but Remus have stopped making it. It looks great but is louder than I'd hoped for, it's not unpleasant but my wife doesn't like it. Any suggestions on how to quieten it? Should I go back to the standard front section or try fitting an aftermarket silencer in the race tube?

Take her out to dinner? Buy her some new jewelry?

My wife's on a diet and already has enough jewellery, though she'd probably disagree on that! I know the clue was in the word "race" but a) It's all Remus do now and b) 500 Madness in the US have one on one of their cars apparently and say it sounds good.

What, you mean someone who sells something says it is really good to try and get you to buy it? I have never come across that before.

I feel really stupid! The back box was badly corroded and leaking, I should have just changed that. I'll post a clip of the sound sometime so other potential buyers can be better informed.

Don't worry. I have some Snake Oil which is 100% guaranteed to reduce exhaust volumes to wife friendly levels when added to your fuel. Usual price is £39.99 but as a Forum member I can sell it to you for £19.99 (plus £20 P&P).

Thanks deeyup and Scout500, I was thinking of trying that but was concerned as it would make the race tube worthless if it didn't work. I'd want to try and recoup some of my expenses by selling it if I go back to a standard system.

Magneti Maerelli rear box. It is reasonable quite but has a nice hard edge snarl.
I got mine from DotShop Italy. Great service and excellent price too.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Ian.

I have a custom cat back stainless steel system with no front box. I know what you mean about loud. My 500 is my daily driver and I love the rorty noise but Madam Redhead finds it a tad loud whenever she's in the car. I find turning AC/DC up helps. :D

Thanks guys, the reasonably muted hard edged snarl is the sound I was after. The Remus is a very deep sound and stops the car sounding Italian, if you know what I mean. I'm thinking of leaving things for a couple of weeks to see how they settle down when there's some carbon build up in the system. If the boominess at 3k RPM persists I have to choose between going back to a standard front system or putting a Powerflow silencer in the race tube. The race tube was only about £120ish so I'm less bothered about changing that than the back box, that was £300+ so is a big hit if I have to part with it.

I've heard the Magneti Marelli on You Tube and it sounds good but a it's bit pricy at €569 (nearly £500 with p&p) in stainless steel, on Dotshop Italia's eBay shop. A German site Alfa-Sportivo-Tuning does them in aluminised mild steel for £320 ish.

Well, I just had a Powerflow front silencer put in the Race Tube and now it sounds as I'd originally wanted, slightly sporty but not too loud. Thanks to everyone who offered advice, I hope others learn from my experience!
