So my 59 Fiat 500 has started randomly displaying the yellow ! triangle and saying check stop lights, but they are all fine and after a few minutes when I press the break it goes off. Mostly its just starting to bug me, almost as much as the flashing mileage every now and then. Any ideas what this could be?

Try changing the bulbs.. very quick and very cheap to do.
I know you say they work but just give it a try.

Yes, just try it. And fit decent quality parts. Sometimes using bulbs which are slightly out of tolerance is sufficient to cause the computer to flag an error message - and the resistance can change as the bulbs age.

Had this same problem on the way home from the NFM Xmas dinner on Sunday. Luckily after changing the bulb the warning light went out and hasn't come back on since.

I had a bulb which was working fine, but bringing up a warning. Was quite annoying.

If the bulb's resistance goes out of tolerance it may be an early warning sign that it will fail in the near future, so the warning message may just be prompting you into fixing the problem before it occurs.

Not necessarily a bad thing if it cuts down on the number of folks driving about with only one headlight.

Yup :) It was going off and on. Did it for months and months on and off.

Maxi, I told you - that is your indicator bulb.

To the OP - in case it is not obvious to you - if the warning comes on when you brake, it is most likely to be one of the two brake light bulbs.

I can vouch for jrkitching's reply - I was getting the warning triangle for two weeks with no specific error message before eventually getting the 'check stop light' message. The bulb itself was still working but blackened.
If the system on these works in a similar way to trucks the bulbs may not necessarily need to be activated to get a warning........so logically if anyone is getting a warning triangle for months with no apparent reason - check the fog light bulbs for blackening as they are likely to be unused for months (if ever).

Flashing mileage is a Canbus issue, it's something that can be resolved with FiatECUscan software, or a trip to the dealers (procedure called canbus proxy alignment).

My old Alfa did it once, resolved it with the ecu software above.

Hi guys the exact same thing is happening to me "Check stop lights", which is really annoying. Lights are fine. Does check stop lights mean all the rear lights?

By the way I am also getting an indication for my DRL's intermittently. They also look fine to me.

So the recommendation is changing all 3 rear stop lights?

Guessing you'll have done this as a forum regular, but probably worth checking the hatch wiring- I'd imagine the "stop lights" will be the three brake lights and a failure in any one would flag the warning.

Of course, one is on the hatch so would be affected by the hatch wiring issue.

yes could be but cannot be related for the DRL light issue as well, which i found to be wiring as well because when i move the wire it removes the warning.

I guess I will just follow standard Fiat operating procedure, as in ignore the warnings until the car dies or the lights stop working = )

I say hatch wiring. My boot light has failed and new bulb hasn't worked. I'm betting on the third hatch wiring fault but I can live without a boot light for now and will wait for the next thing to go wrong and then get a repair!

Interesting, Sisters 2011 500 had the boot light fail a little while back, I've looked, bulb is OK, and dash says when boot is open so the switch feed is obviously getting the the body computer, so I've decided to give up out of ease.

However occasionally it has started to come up with stop light failure recently, even without any issues being apparent.

Looks like I might need to check this wiring issue :(

I have 2 wiring issues, for the front left side DRL sensor and for the stop lights sensor. DRL was working intermittently, changed the lights which did not fix it but then played with the wire for the DRL's and now it works fine but still sometimes shows check DRL sensor on the dash. Stop lights seem all to be working, but the sensor is saying otherwise, so i have 2 warnings on the dash for the sensors.

Will only do something about it when the lights completely stop working.
