General Street or Twin Air Plus?

Good to see you back on form Arorat. (y)
I thnk you might have forgotten one. Deteriorating eyesight. I'm resisting buying a set of glasses and have resorted to using a little LED torch if it's a little too dark to read.

Spent 8 days in Norway, amazing untouched country on our doorstep. Loved the hiking, you do take life in your own hands even on marked mountain routes - look up Preachers Rock. Canadian Rockies although having bigger mountains had easier hiking terrain which is just what you need when you are not used to climbing mountains daily living in London !! Norway is on our annual radar, a bit expensive though, but ok.

I did not want to mention eyesight, however xenons take lighting to another level. btw: I tried some funky bifocal contact lenses, didn't work for me.

To play devils advocate I would say that there are downsides too. Just so you know the pitfalls.

They are fitted with self levellers which is linked to the rear suspension.
There are also lamp washers that pop out when you spray water on your windscreen.
There's quite a bit to go wrong in the system, and you could face big bills MOT time.
As I said before, some cars also need the dealer to change the bulb for you, and it may be a headlight out job.
If you go to France it is a legal requirement to carry spare bulbs (they are not cheap) and the old bill will gladly relieve you of some cash if you don't have them even if you couldn't change them yourself.
Also, they will add little in resale value.

I have had them on 2 cars before, a Golf and an Espace. The way they light the road is pretty amazing, and signposts light up like they are illuminated with neon.

I am a fan of them, and if you could get them for say £200 I would order them, but any more and I'd think long and hard

:)

Thanks for that, deeyup, good to know!

Could be a bit of costly extravagance, more cons than pros so far for me, different ball game if it were a cheaper option as you rightly said.

Should be corrected with spectacles or contacts and not reliant on just putting more light on the road. It's a legal requirement.

I've re-read my original posting and it didn't read right. What I have trouble reading is size 8 font which is now being used by the likes of O2 on their terms and conditions at the back of their contracts. From a visit to an optician recently he said that I don't need glasses yet but it's on the cards. Thankfully I don't need glasses for driving since my 'long vision' is still perfect.

My Dad on the other hand isn't too lucky and regretted not ordering them on his recent batmobile. He now limits his driving to the day time and gets home before dark. For some £500 is money well spent.

Interesting bit of trivia on how Xenons minic daylight....
http://www.cci-icc.gc.ca/caringfor-prendresoindes/articles/10agents/chap08-eng.aspx
Light Does Not "Contain" Ultravioletand Infrared ... and infrared, or that museum lighting may cause UV and IRdeterioration ... Our eye changes from night vision (scotopic) to colour vision... museum and characterizing the benefits of any UV filters on thesesources....Xenon almost mimics daylight 6500K.

had the debate with my VW dealer as golf is off to france, replacement xenon bulbs are £150 a piece for it, in reality he said if your xenon bulb has gone its the least of your worries as you probably dont have much of the front end or headlights left

I've had a bulb fail, and not through crashing. The police over there in France will still fine you if you don't have a replacement. They see British motorists as an easy target.
If I were you, I'd just put one of those replacement halogen kits
In the car to at least have something to show them.
Hopefully you won't get stopped. Another thing (sorry to go so far off topic) is you must also carry a breathalyser as well.

With the way France is going with Mr. Hollandes useless policies (if he taxes the rich 75% they will all just leave), even more French people will move to the UK and spend money there! So i think all the Brits should boycott France for even just a month, and then we'll see how the Gendarmes act with British motorists. -= )

Speaking of Xenons, yes they are amazing it turns the night into day. In the very dark out of town roads in Bodrum, Turkey, I was very happy to be driving my aunts Ford Kuga with Xenons. In the city though you dont need them. If you live in the middle of nowhere, they are worth the cash. But if you use it for shopping in London, completely pointless. In Athens i get away with it just by using the far lights, pitch black roads are not that common, so i feel comfortable enough with the 'normal lights', even more comfortable when replacing a bulb just costs 8 euros at the petrol station and i can find them anywhere! Right now i am using Wurth H7's, good enough for me!

breathalyser:eek: What for? in case the Gendarme don't have one?!!

Not planning a cross continental road trip anytime soon!(y)

For that to happen the gendarmes would have to catch you first = )
I did an aller-retour crossing France when i drove from the UK to Greece and back and i only saw one Gendarme speed radar trap and one panda car on the motorway the whole way! In Italy one carabinieri!
I am not saying you wont be caught but to be caught you would have to stand out in some way, and luckily the Fiat 500 (especailly in dark colors) is a rather low profile anonymous car. Mitsubishi EVO or Ford Focus ST or dare
i say RS? I think you are asking to be stopped, and i would include the Fiat Abarth with scorpion stickers in that list as well!

It's a legal requirement that you have TWO authorised breathalysers in the car when travelling in France. I assume there's tax element in their purchase price.

If you are a tourist it will not apply until the 1st of November and even then the fine is quite low at €11. The fine for having a Sat Nav with speed locations loaded onto it is a mouth watering €1,500. I wonder will they check the apps on an iphone.

AFAIK the Street does not have the 'silver' dash as per the TA+, pretty sure it comes in standard body colour.

Good to see the thread getting back on topic. (y)
