Hi,

I am confused reading the dipstick

Maybe someone can help me?

I am unsure which is the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick. The manual just say keep level between the min and max, but does not show a picture of where this is.
In the picture below there is a "skinny" waisted bit on the stick, I've circled it, the intersecting line is the oil level.
Maybe someone can help me?

I saw the slight indents like minus signs above the skinny bit and wondered if these were the level markers?? The AA technician was confused too.

I suspect the top picture is correct, but want to make sure before driving with too little oil.

The car was new yesterday and there are oil patches where I parked it.

Cheers for any help (y)

The skinny bit is the acceptable operating level, the maximum & minimum points being the top & bottom shoulders. The line in your photo is about halfway between min & max.

The indents are most likely just part of the moulding process.

Just drive down to the dealer & get them to check out the leak :).

Well, that's good news, thanks for that. (y)

Whilst we're on the subject, when checking the oil level on a twinair engine, should you just rest the cap ontop of the threads to dip or fully screw it in then lift out to dip?

Sorry about any bad spelling, its hard to type on a phone screen :/

Sounds a good idea. The only reason i as is because the lawnmower has a similar style dipstick and it has printed on it "do not turn on threads when checking level" and it got me thinking.

On the twinair you screw the cap/stick full in before you read the level off the stick as you get the wrong reading if not . The description on how to do this is all in the manuals FYI:)

On page 159 of my manual, for the TA engine it says to clean the dipstick, re-insert it and re-tighten the plug, then remove it and check the level. Pretty clear, just a shame they don't include a picture of the Max and Min marks, but the first photo here is correct.

The only manual I got with my car was a 'quick guide'
I wondered if there should be a proper manual??
I have never known a manufacturer to put it on a DVD before.

Just checked, and theres the disk in the wallet!

On a positive note, forgot to say yesterday, the AA tech said he'd never checked an oil level on a Fiat before and that he can't remember the last time he was called to recover one. They are very reliable. :)

I got my car in March '11 and got a full manual in book form. My mate got his in September and got a DVD. Seems a bit cheapskate when you've spent 12 grand. When I responded earlier, I looked it up on the .pdf copy I downloaded to my Kindle - sad, but it saved me having to go out to the car!

Our March 2012 registered TA Lounge came with a full paper manual. Not seen a disc in the wallet for ours. It did come with an equally-impossible to read dipstick though

Hi friends, am new the forum, i also have a problem of a broken dipstick, any one who has fiat brava 1.6, i will appreciate the measurement. Am from kenya and the car is not common here.

Ours is a 2011 TA and it has a gold colored dipstick and very difficult to read.
I'd prefer it if it was white so I could SEE the oil.

Mick.

Yes an old thread but it was the top hit for Twinair+dipstic. Fantastic pic and description still relevant to any TA newbee. I've re-attached the pic in case the O/P removes it from photobucket.

I was starting to wonder if the gauge was supposed to be attached to the end of the plastic rod on my Punto Twinair, and at the bottom of my sump.

The 2012 Punto handbook is also vague, and they didn't bother illustrating the lower end of the dipstick :S.

I was expecting something with min + max lines and crisscross hatching between.

Good to see they were white back in 2012 when my car was new too

Mine too is hard to read now it's gone golden, probably harder when I do the oil change soon.
