Took the twin air in for some warranty work. Didn't get much of it fixed, but they did do a software upgrade and what a different it has made!
Previously power came in at about 3.5k revs and went up to about 5.5k before running out (although in the lower gears it was fairly easy to hit the rev limiter). It was so peaky, fun but not good at low revs. Now it picks up nicely from about 2k and runs smoothly up to just below the red line and when you change up, it doesn't drop out of the power band.
She drives so much better.
Economy doesn't seem to have improved, which is a surprise, but only 2 tanks in so we'll see.

Your poor car if you leave it till the redline to change gears.

Pfft. Fiat's are built to be driven enthusiastically. My 1.4 regularly sees activity in the red and its fine after 77k miles. :D

Tell me about it, the twinair has no redline fun factor it just dies. The 1.4 is completely the opposite, it likes it when you go to the red!

Fiat ECU scan can display how long an engine has spent in an over rev state. I'm at 58 seconds in total. Be interesting to see what info you get back from a twin air engine.

Do you mean above the red line or the red limiter because red line says 6000 but for the 1.4 thats bs you can take it up to 7250 before hitting the rev limiter.

Oh and i tried red lining a twinair and it didnt let me go over 6000. It did not let me hit the rev limiter it just died of power. I dont know if it was because it was a newish engine but i think the ecu doesnt let you hit the rev limiter like you do in the 1.4. Either that or it just reaches 6 and it has a soft limiter and you cant pass it basically and there is no point as it completely dies of power near 6000. Its just not that kind of engine.

Out of interest - to the OP: How old is your car? I know the earlier ones had a 'recall' (it's not safety related, so not officially a recall) with a batch of faulty turbos, and I wonder if this update was combined with that.

Did you ask for the software to be upgraded? Or did they do it with the repairs?

it was stalling on stop/start when restarting. Initially in Eco and then normally too. The update was only just out, something to do with the engine cutting out if it detected slip when the car wasn't moving I think, didn't mean a lot to me.

It's on an 11 plate with just over 7.5k miles

Just realised I didn't answer the question! I asked if there was an update, but she was very open knew about an update that was due to released soon, so we booked the car in for after it would be released.

It's the time spent pinging off the limiter ;)

Jason - I keep meaning to ask - do you use your 500 just to get to your racing, or actually for the events?

No, the 500 is my daily driver, occassional track day toy and does a ring trip or two a year.

The race car isn't road legal. Or functional at the moment since the ECU is sitting on the coffee table in front of me along with 5 empty bottles of Peroni :D

Cheers for the answer. I will have to ask them about this... might make the engine mapping better or at least better optimised.

Yep, mine is a 61 plate with ~2.8K on the clock now, and that's how it has been since I picked it up at the dealer (y) It's very tourqey at low revs -- lots of fun at the lights!
