Technical TwinAir oil and filter change

Technical TwinAir oil and filter change

If I remember, I'll take photo's when I do mine in 500 miles.. Oil filter is at the back of the engine on the gearbox end, facing at an angle towards the brake master cylinder, there's an under tray under the front of the car to take off, and then there'll be a sump bolt somewhere at the bottom of the engine.

Easy peasy :)

...done in an OE way.

So you're going to dent the sills, overfill the sump and (if you choose to pay yourself an extra £50), put some nice swirly marks in the paintwork from the 'complimentary' valet ;).

I'd love to see how they tell I've change the oil on my motor when it's done.

Actually they just might be able to - at least the first time. Both my 500 & Panda left the factory with a different oil filter to the OEM part used by the main dealer network for servicing. Chris@Souls kindly ran the part number of the original filter through the computer & whilst it's recognised by the system as a genuine FIAT part, it's not orderable by the dealer network & is only used within the factory.

Realistically, though, the chance that anyone would actually check on this is infintessimally small.

Lol! Yes - I'll thoroughly trash the car and then charge myself rectification fees!

Like you say, the chances of the spotty apprentice seeing that the oil filter isn't the first fit FPT one is quite remote :)

Back in the time that I had the MX5 the US had a very active forum - never participated but they were well informed. I thought this would be more fitting here than in the 'Oil in my Fiat' thread.

If one is doing an oil change it would be worthwhile getting a new sump washer. Dragged the picture off the service history attached for the 'new' motor.

What kind of oil/filters should I use in my Miata? How often should I change them?
The Miata Owners Manual recommends 7,500 mile oil changes, 5,000 under "harsh" conditions. Consumer Report magazine thinks this is reasonable as well. Some people like to change the oil more frequently as "cheap insurance." Other people are comfortable going longer. We recommend using the "harsh" schedule.

Synthetics are just fine, but engine treatments and other oil additives are NOT recommended. If you live in an area with extreme temperatures, consult your owners manual for oil and other fluid recommendations. Using genuine Mazda filters is highly recommended. If you change your own oil, you probably noticed the little washer on the drain plug. This washer should be replaced EVERY time you remove the plug because it bends when you tighten the plug and may leak if reused.

Does the TA have a sump washer? The 1.2 FIRE most certainly does not - it uses a tapered plug.

The T-jet in the MiTo is the same block as the 1368cc in the 1.4. I never changed the oil in the 500 but in the Marea which I've done 2 years in succession has the washer. But if the 1.4 engine hasn't got one it wouldn't be the first time that someone got charged for something that wasn't needed. Did you see the amount of oil that was bought for the T-jet on the invoice. :)

I'm not familiar with the 1.4 engine but you only need 2.9 litres for the 1.2. There have been plenty of reports on the forum of FIAT dealerships significantly overfilling the sump and I have first-hand knowledge of one of them.

IIRC it was 2.9 litres for the 500 1368cc. Haven't got the figure for the TA. Screensnap courtesy of FiatUSA500

don't fancy a warranty i take it?
Well, not necessarily. If the consensus is that it is a bad idea, I might just take it back to the dealer and ask them to do the oil and filter change to stay in the warranty. Then again, I might just risk it.

Good point about the sump washer -- any ideas as to the guage / diameter?

Had a check on the FF and there does appear to be a sump washer on the 1.4 but I don't know about the Twin Air.

There's a guide on the above thread on changing the oil on a 500 1.2 (principle the same) and JR also did one as well if you wanted to have a go yourself. It would be important to use the exact same filter and oil.

Thats what it said on mobil 1 when asking what oil to put and which engine type it is.

He's correct, it's 2.8 in the sump, but 3.2l including filter. Handbook says so..

I checked the Multi-air of the 1368cc and it's 3.4L and for the MA with the turbo it's 3.5L (this is for the 'Engine sump and filter').

The sump only figues between a standard 1368cc and a Multi-air 1368cc is 2.75L verus 3.1L. These figures are the same for NA and boosted engines.

So an engine in multi-air form takes a lot more oil that the standard one. There's probably a technical explanation for it.
