I joined the Fiat Forum because my wife is potty about the new 500 and I wanted to check out a few things too.

It’s actually purely thanks to the Fiat 500’s birth that my wife passed her driving test two and a half years ago!

Having seen the new F500 in the motoring press and also hearing that local dealerships were going to be linked to the national UK launch party I was dragged there on a dark winter evening in torrential rain. We were fed on really good pastas though and got a good look around all the first models. Seeing the live party in London being broadcast at all the dealership too all helped give a sense of occasion to it. We also learnt that the build quality was good and safety features were impressive.
Uh-oh, one problem though, love the look of the car, want one, but no driving licence...
... Until exactly a year to the day of her first lesson! We’ve put things off like holidays and moving house, so she can save the rest needed to buy her “realistic, red Italian supercar beginning with F”. The time is nearly here as my 22year old run-around won’t last much longer. This means her first car (we did up a MOT failure, a Peugeot 106 known as her “silver dream-machine”) now comes to me and gets to stay in the family, so she’s happy about that.

We went to see Cars2 a couple of weeks ago – many cute smiling new Fiat 500’s in the Italian part of the film to be seen!

We got the e-mail today to tell us a limited amount of Ragamuffin paint is available again after the disasters in Japan halted production of the metal particles.
We can add to the Ragamuffin Red v Pasadoble Red queries so over to my wife for her expertise on that one!

Yes R-Red is the only colour car for my dream car. It’s also a colour that can be seen in most circumstances I think and doesn’t look like a grey sky. My silver dream machine was a lovely start to my driving lessons, but I swear it’s invisible on wet, grey days! I didn’t know the pearl/shimmer red had been out for a year until I saw a Ragamuffin Red on the dealership forecourt last summer! I immediately knew it wasn’t Pasadoble. By then I’d missed out on the Scrappage Scheme though, VAT went up, and now a summer price increase again, so I’ve been saving to add the difference onto my original £10K.
Pasadoble is a nice, true red, but it’s a flat one-dimensional red in comparison to Ragamuffin.
R-Red looks very similar if you see it on its own but if you put them side by side (I’ve seen this) the difference is so obvious – especially when the sun hits. R-Red shimmers slightly and seems to be a shade more towards an orange-red then, until it darkens over again as the clouds pass. It’s an optional extra, but I say worth it for the little surprise you get in the sun every so often. Also, Fiat dealership says the metallic paint is generally stronger, extra layers needed to achieve the finish, generally do make metallic paint the tougher choice, thus it should be more resilient to chipping.

The final decision before ordering, is to decide if the lower edge of the opening roof line is going to affect my line of vision or not. So I’m test driving an open roof on Monday, also to hear the noise levels.

Hi you two, glad you liked the “school essay” on “my favourite thing”

I’m really looking forward to my test-drive tomorrow to sort out the roof decision before deciding to press the “sod-it” button, which you must just do sometimes; can’t take it with you and all. Being in my not quite mid-40’s now (er, how did that happen) better get some fun out this driving lark before the DVLA want my licence back!

I know driving is so ordinary for most who passed in their late teens or twenties, but it always seemed so unobtainable to me. So I’m still elated now my probation period is over as I get over an hour’s time back every day! I have butterflies in my tum just thinking about buying a new car after 25 years using buses - and often being beaten home by hubby who finishes work an hour later than me.

I tell people I want a ”Red Italian Supercar beginning with F” and watch them work it out.

For interest my spec is, so far:

Ž1.2 Lounge
Žstandard multispoke alloys (I’d have chosen these on looks anyway, cleaning them may be another matter)
ŽSide rubbing strip with chrome badge
ŽClimate control
ŽBlack ambience
ŽRed and black cloth seats
ŽRAGAMUFFIN red

and possibly the opening sunroof after testing this tomorrow, or stick with the fixed glass roof, either way with all the black inside I want some additional light coming in!

Other protection items (future birthday gift ideas): mudflaps, car mats, rubber boot liner
and lastly:
that wipe-board you stick on the dash looks fun, anyone out there gone for one – and more importantly do you use it? I don’t know of any other car with a wipe-board accessory!:)

Good luck with choosing your car. i have a twin air which I got in April which I love to pieces.

I bought the wipe board for "Gino", my car but must confess it is still in the box. I was a bit disappointed when it arrived to see that it was see through plastic and had to be stuck permanently to the dash. I thought it was magnetic vinyl and could be easily removed. I bought a piece of vinyl to attach the sticker too but then realised the dash is actually plastic and the vinyl wouldn't stick Doh!! I actaully wanted it to write mileage down as I travel a lot for work and find not having an independent trip counter is annoying and resetting trip A or B is a bit frustrating. Anyway, I may get round to fixing it one of these days. The little tin that comes with it for pencils is really cute.

I also bought the coat hanger for the back seat which is really useful for my work jacket and the fragrance diffuser whcih is very expensive but I wanted only the best for my little car. :D

Sounds lovely (y) I've never seen a ragamuffin red in the flesh so it will be great to see some pictures!!

I've ordered my Volare Blue lounge TA and should be getting it on 1st september. I think we're in similar positions in that the Fiat 500 is the car of our dreams, I hope it lives up to both of our expectations!!

Here is a link to a few pictures of the Ragamuffin Red that I posted on an earlier thread. The pearlescent paint should be tougher than the pastel Pasadoble Red. With any Pearlescent paints it has to be seen in the flesh to appreciate the difference. I have attached a picture of one that I saw in a local Garage.

Thanks for your message and info - we like Gino's red stripe!
Wipe-Board - I expect it would peel-off quite readily though if you wanted, don't expect it's much different from a mobile phone protective cover. I'm sure Fiat wouldn't use anything likely to ruin the dashboard upon removal, but don't know if it would stretch when removed so couldn't be re-applied. I'll ask the dealership about it tomorrow, they may not know too much about the accessories, but I'll see what I can find out.

Coat hanger is a very good idea, as I too have that work jacket to consider. Another thing for the gift ideas list (my in-law's will be so relieved for a few years, they don't do surprises as it stresses them out, so always ask hubby for an ideas list for me!)

Perfume diffuser - it's a unique idea so glad you're enjoying yours, but can I use it without the perfume insert? (I assume it's some sort of tablet that goes in it) as I get really allergic to artificial scents (at worst affects breathing/makes me instantly car-sick). I can use natural essential oils though, and often have spearmint on the go in my Peugeot 106, or lemon. As their concentration can affect plastics, currently I just drip some onto a round cotton pad which is hooked onto an untwisted red paperclip, the other end is fixed into the vent. If I can put a pad with my own oil on it, then maybe. I'll ask tomorrow as well.

Hi - thanks for your Ragamuffin photo - YESS, that's my girl! The camera flash in your photo exactly describes how I saw it in the sunlight myself - from across the main road with hubby, doing yet another "fly-by" the dealership last summer we knew it wasn't Pasadoble. It was one of those days where the clouds kept passing the sun so you could see the shimmer when the sun touched it. It was a diesel though, so not for me, but it was so obviously "my" colour!
I know I'll feel EPIC in a Ragamuffin Red (yep, all hail Jeff from the moneysupermarket ads)!

The picture that I attached on the posting was from an old camera phone so it is unfortunately poor quality and doesn't do it justice. I have the funk white which is pearlescent and when I did some looking as to how is it different and how do I explain it here was a 'wobbly' one from wiki ...
Pearlescent has teeny weeny glass beads added to the paint, this caused weird light refraction hence you get a multicoloured paint effect (depending on which angle you view it from). Metallic has teeny weeny bits of reflective "stuff" added to the paint, hence light bounces off the relective surface.
They also stated that pearlescent it is best used in lighter colours.

I don't know where I got this from but it would apply to the Ragamuffin...
Features
Pearl white auto paint has special additives mixed with it to give a reflective sheen to your car's paintwork. Some modern pearl finishes use pearl flakes that are reflective from one angle but also translucent, so that light can shine through them.
Types
Some modern pearl white auto paints are made up of three or more layers. The base layer is white. Then comes a layer of transparent paint mixed with the pearl additive. Finally, a clear layer is applied. You can also find white "ghost pearl" auto paints. These allow subtle designs to be applied to the car which are visible only under certain conditions.

Yes me too but you first as your order is nearly in and you must be getting very excited!

Interesting info there, thanks very much. When we've seen an occasional Funk White like yours go by, you can see the pearlescent shimmer immediately-it's a lovely finish on the pale colour. The dealership told us that the metallic particles that go into the Ragamuffin are a specialist automotive paint element that's only made in Japan - production was halted for months due to the disasters there, but a small quantity is just now available (me first, me first!)

My work colleagues are just sick of my "Viva Italia" joy about a darn car. So for fun I actually sent some of them a photo taken in a white one I test drove - and then faithfully promised I'd shut up about it until it appeared in the carpark one day somewhen. It'll be so hard to contain myself once I've put my deposit down.

Everyone today, thanks for sharing in my enthusiasm:wave: and bye for now!

VERRRRRRRRRRRRRY excited! It's now less than 2 weeks to go! I've been in to sign the finance paperwork now so just have to wait until a week on Thursday! I've never had a new new car before so the wait is almost killing me! :bang:
I got my car 2 weeks ago and it was definitely worth the wait . I don't know if it's because it's black I have the red sport stripe along the side but it seems to attract loads of attention from young people in particular and a bunch of young teens outside my local shop said that my car was " so cool " . Praise indeed !

I think that the Volare blue that you have chosen will look great as I drove past a glamourous looking young woman driving a volare blue car with the Fiat bodykit and glass roof and it looked amazing , it's a very unusual colour and I think it suits the car .
Anyway enjoy it when it comes although the wait is torture !

Sadly, if you are allergic to artificial scents then I don't think the perfume diffuser will work for you as it has a circle of three different fragrances that you place inside the diffuser. I can't see how you would be able to use it with anything else. although the perfume is very subtle, even at full blast, but I know some smells can be overpowering. My daughter is a great fan of the jelly bean air freshners and one sniff of her car sends me reeling it is so strong. But she likes it and still complains of Gino's new smell - which completely escapes me now.

I love the passadoble red. We were very tempted to order that colour but they had a car like Gino in the showroom and we couldn't take our eyes off it and decided to have a similar one with one or two additions and without interescope as we wanted the storage under the seat.

Good luck with your car.

Pearlescent coating - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pearl paint has mica particles in it, not glass.

That's what I thought, google "pearlescent paint glass beads" and a few forum links and nothing else. This is why you can't trust everything you read on a forum. I didn't know how pearlescent paint worked, but the idea of little glass beads seemed rather far fetched and I didn't believe it.

Always been a fan of Subaru's use of mica paints as it gives a great effect
subaru_wrx_sti_hatch_in_wr_blue_mica_3.jpg

That said I wouldn't want to own a car in that colour.

The only thing I wonder about is what actually gives the pearlescent effect as our Subaru outside is a dark green mica and certainly isn't pearlescent! :) Must be something else..... I would imagine it's similar to flip paint, but obviously without the massive difference between colours (Purple and orange for instance)

Daniel - I would be very thorough in checking out information posted on the internet and would cross reference it to check on its validity. I am not too sure where you are coming from on 'This is why you can't trust everything you read on a forum'.

I had qualified the description (a bit wobbly) of pearlescent paint in comparison to metallic (I actually own a car in this colour). The description was loose in the use of the word 'glass beads' and was used to illustrate the effect and not to describe the actual makeup. The wikipedia description that was posted by your goodself was too technical and for most people would 'go straight over their head'. This thread is about the OPs excitement in getting a new car that she had waited on for a very long time. I made what I thought was a useful contribution. I hope that I have not mis-led or mis-informed the OP in anyway.

Michael.
