Off Topic Has anyone got attached to their 'old' car ?

the white one tomorrow is a '07 with the Turbo charger. Wrong reg. Possibly an import. Meeting him at 3pm a few miles outside the city for a 'bit of a run'. He knows that I'm only half interested. I did notice that its all girls driving them now (500 was a good training ground). At least it's not the convertible so Lorry drivers can't give me a wolf whistle.:)

ss, you know its right

Basically when going around a corner the back end can skip out.

A powerful 4wd car is fantastic, even though the suspension on our car is tired I love the fact that you can get on the throttle so much earlier than the 500. With the 500 is you try to accelerate too early and have to lift then you'll drift out wide and when you lift you get a little lift off oversteer wobble if you lift off to quickly.

Is this problem there even in lower gears and driving properly into a corner and accelerating out ?

With Advanced biking (I didn't go for the test) I learnt about vanishing points and entry and exit from corners, its astounding how much accuracy & safe speed can be obtained once you learn to read roads. Your probably know this already, but the vanishing point topic sums driving in and out of corners. 2 wheel approach can applied to cars however the dynamics of the chassis is your point !!

I usually only drive quickly on roads that I know :) The thing with the 1.2 is that to travel at any sort of meaningful speed across country you need to carry speed through the corners so that has a bit of a bearing on how the car is driven. I wouldn't say it's a major problem, I've never come close to falling off the road really. The little wiggles I've had would easily be sorted out by ESP :)

Well did you buy it ??

I didn't make him an offer but I let he down nicely and thanked him for his time.
He let me have a good drive in the car but it didn't do it for me.
No bluetooth - a problem for me since I've got used to a decent handsfree.
Didn't have as much power as the '08 - seemed a little sluggish with a more pronounced hestitation around 2,500rpm
It supposedly boosts to 13lbs of pressure - a little less than the A500 so the 'S' acceleration is more linear. The JCW goes to 19lbs.
Small trottle travel - a lot less than the 500.
Car was quick but it didn't feel it - lacked the 'fun' factor.
Muted 'single' pop of the back exhaust when slowing down.
Had 17 inch wheels and on a man hole on a dual carriageway it gave quite a thud on the front wheel like it hit the bumpstop.
On a bumpy section owner was a little nervous and I had to drive around little bumps in the road to keep him happy.
Back end very tidy and car had a go kart feel about it (posted a pic of its rear suspension - unlikely it would ever appear on a A500).
Not raw enough - it would need resorting to handbrake turns to get a thrill - unlikely I would do that on a test drive or even in my own car.
Clutch felt a bit heavy and the gearbox although precise took a bit of work to change gear. Had to 'find' 6th gear.
Poor visibility compared to higher up position of the 500.
Felt the OH wouldn't get on to well with it if she had to drive it.
Couldn't see how fast I was going - speedometer in the wrong place.
The '08 was a better drive but this '07 was a little disappointing despite looking better with the Cream colour (like the BNW) and the black roof.
Had Xenons which the owner raved about.
He mentioned the price of 2 replacement run flats (17s).
Good quality plastics and it was noticeable when I got back into the 500 which seemed a little cheap.
There was a comment on the MINI forum of owners stating that it was a perceived as a 'gay's car'. That person then gave someone a go in their car and they showed them how fast it was & then 'they' couldn't say it was a gay's car. Get the impression that blokes driving MINI Cooper S are more conscious about what people think of them whilst guys driving 500s couldn't give a toss.
Saw 3 other cream MINIs on the way home.
Sitting low down in the MINI you feel you are in a little car a bit like its boot.
Fiat / Abarth have nothing to worry about with the MINI / Cooper S - once they can get prospective buyers into the 500 first so that they can get used to the high 'sit and beg' position. Once adapted there's no going back.
I would sum it up by saying that the MINI lacks passion.

Great sum up, makes you realise how good the 500 is and value for money. So what you test driving next :)

I might be 'pushing the boat out' if I did another review. I reckon the FF must be fed up of the updates by now.
I picked up some silver touch up paint and a bit of spray to fix the scratchs and scuffs on the wheels - hope that answers your question but I might get a little blast in that A500 with the mark of a rock on its bonnet.:D

I agree. theres a very small digital display for your speed (if the owner had it on) but it jumps about too much when braking or accelerating.

I agree. I think its just the whole BMW thing. Friends of mine who drive BMW's dont stop going on about the brand. its always "but but but its a BMW...".

I had a go in a Mini Cooper which is quicker than my 500 1.4 but it felt slower and heavier.

About a month ago I went for a spin in a '05 Porsche Boxster 2.7 courtesy of well known but reputable 'fast car' outfit based in North Dublin. Priced at €17K - 'value' for money, this were €30k last year). It had a rebuild engine. It seems that the boxster engine can 'pop' at any stage and is known as the Italian of the German cars (unfair but given Fiat's 'old' track history possibly justified). It was a wet Sunday and I discovered pretty quickly that this car didn't come equipped with ASC. It's an extra ! So since I value my life I graciously handed the keys despite protests from the OH.

Well last Saturday I went for a 'drive' in a A500 - the same car that I had driven this time last year with 15K on it. It now (pictured on the Abarth section under 'cheap Abarth') has 22K. It was still a blast and now that I'm a bit more relaxed I noticed quite a few things that I hadn't noticed before. There was a wine or a drone from the gearbox - maybe they all do that. When you had the door open the exhaust was noisy a bit like a Monza so I reckon it would be needing a backbox in a year or 2. Car pulled to the left. Average mpg readout gave a figure of 23.5 - not too much of a shock since my own funk 1.4 showed 28.5 when I originally took possession of it. This car was on steroids. If you were going to spend money on modifying a F500 - don't bother. It will never get to the urge and the 'power' of a A500. In some ways going for the drive was like re-visiting an old flame. Got the impression that there had been a lot of 'bums on the seat' since our original encounter and although I thoroughly enjoyed it I am unsure if I'm prepared to 'marry it'. Of the 3 A500 that have been for sale recently in the Emerald one was 'given back' to Fiat Ireland ('10 eseessee at stupid money) and the other 2 are still 'sitting there'.

Don't bother with the boxter, Take a drive in a Carrera 4, they will stick to the road in all weathers. Take one out in the wet and you will be putting a deposit down.

Have a look at this bad boy

Awesome car and typical as to how secondhand values have gone.

In the event of some spare cash - a little bit of trivia for a budding 4x4 23 year batchelor that doesn't need too much space where he could have the best of both worlds...
That's one reason the new C4 is wider. There's another, too. Previously, the extra weight of the 4WD versions meant they were slower than the pure rear-drivers around a dry racetrack. The greater tire and tread width of the new C4 makes it corner faster in the dry than a C2--and a lot faster in the wet.

For me selling my convertible vw beetle after 4.5 years of ownership it was a tough decision. Somehow i was "forced" to, due to its majority of problems of every kind that had appeared from day one. (i sold it with 68000 km on the clock) I was so emotionally attached to it but the whole situation had really driven me crazy. Because of the crisis and its low popularity i had to wait for a total of 7 months to find a buyer but in the end i made it. My love to "rejuvenated" retro cars lead me to the purchase of the 500.

agree on the pork front as had been toying with a boxster/cayman to replace the scrirocco until i went to bedford autodrome, they were a bit upset at being humbled by a golf with a fat backside (all be it a reasonably well sorted one), 997 C2/C4 as were coming into budget range, great car but i think my pockets weren't deep to run one in terms of porsche tax and in reality it would have to be a 997 gt3 and dream on

didn't think i was attached until the scirocco until i drove it for the last time on saturday before it is turned back to standardish and sold, realised it was the end of the project and that it would never be as good again, that said looking forward to its replacement
