Got a message on the answerphone to contact the Fiat dealer about a recall on our 500.

I wonder what it's about, and whether it's all 500s or just TwinAirs or what?

Any info gratefully received. :)

Might be worth checking vosa website. That has all official recalls listed.

It could be absolutely anything.

I wonder if this is the turbo recall? Could you ask what up to what VIN it affects in case my car is affected? (it was built in late May, early June)

It'll also help any people here who think their car could possibly be affected..

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here but why not just ring a Fiat dealer or customer services?

Yep- picked up the message gone 6pm yesterday evening.

Finally got through and it appears to be linked to the TwinAir.

Nothing major- only replacing the flipping turbocharger!

Apparently there are two batch numbers- one is okay and the other batch need replacing, as they have been failing.

Car will be checked over tomorrow and I'll report back.

I am interested in this, could you ask where the turbo is seated and what to check for ? just say a friend has a TA as well and was wondering if he needs to check. More than likely they will have turbo vs chasis, vs contact details to hand to make recalls and we are not affected.

Cheers bud.

The turbo is on the front of the engine at the top, it's partially concealed by the plastic engine cover, but you can see it peering out under it's metal heat shield also.

Wonder how they fail. I suspect catastrophically and the engine eats the internals - hence them being eager to replace before that happens.

I also got an official phone call today about a recall on my twin air although last week when it went in to the dealer for something else they mentioned it was due a recall for a new turbo. It is booked in for the middle of August to coincide with their decal expert as my red stripe is lifting off on the passsenger side and that is going to be replaced at the same time.

Yep

it is for the turbo, although according to the service book two activities were undertaken (campaign 5541 & 5526). It took them two days to do mine.

When did you get your TAs, thanks

Not much to add really.

Not all TAs are affected- it's a batch produced between certain dates, but the place was busy and the chap on service was playing his cards close to his chest.

We're away for a while so we're leaving the car there til we get back.

I wouldn't imagine that to be the case tbh, turbo's don't usually fail in that way

You haven't seen a turbo fail have you?

I've seen ones with stuck waste gates that have oversped, then worn the bearing out, which has allowed plenty of end float, which then means the compressor chewed against the housing and filled the charge piping, cooler and intake with aluminium. It's not as uncommon as you think.
