I found many posts about twin air and 1,2 and 1,4. But most of the time everybody is saying that theirs is best choice etc.

Is here anybody who drove both and can explain difference?

speeds, acceleration, mpg etc ...

MPG TA mpg varies a lot guess between 38-50 depending on how you can restraint yourself. Whilst the 1.4 gets typcially 32-35mpg it might stretch to the low 40s if you're being 'good'.

Acceleration. Off the lights 1.4 is quicker - power band between 4k-6k. Has ESP as standard (which has a form of traction control). TA can be quicker sometimes - turbo gives it an instant urge with its power band lower the rev range.

Speeds. 1.4 has the higher speed. cc counts. It would interesting to know which is is better on juice at brisk motorway speed of around 85mph. 1.4 returns around 37mpg. Another TA driver will give a real world figure at this speed. If I was being chased by the gestabo I'd opt for the 1.4 but I would get caught.

Gears. 6 speed on the 1.4 is nice and keeps the engine on the 'boil'. 6th gear is the same as the 5th of the diesel and 'one up' from the 1.2. I don't know if the 5th gear ratio of the TA is same as the 1.2

Suspension. 1.4 is a better setup than the TA and holds better on the twisties.

Tunability. TA can get a TMC chip upgrade for around £290 and brings the power from 85 to 100bhp. Not too sure if I would risk it. The 1.4 can have its power increased from 100bhp to 120-130bhp but would typcially cost around £2k so it is uneconomic. You can play with it a little but it will probably end having to have a remap. Few dabble with it.

I drive my 1.4 hard and get 38 mpg most the time. On open roads above 40MPH it'll do 42-46 mpg.

The MPG figures that mjsmke is quoting is for the Euro 5 model. The ones that I gave an the earlier post is for a Euro 4 model without stop/start and has 149grs/km. That said on a '08 Sport 1.4 driving an easy country drive with the OH brought my typical country mileage to an average 48mpg. This was on a nicely broken in engine fitted with a CAI. I didn't post the picture of the speedo on Maxi's mpg thread because I didn't have the proof that I did more than 50 miles. :)

If I was buying new I would buy a TA  and if you were a spirited driver I would specify ESP.

There is a guy on the torqueitalia forum who would like to try the TA but would not trade his 1.4 for one. A performance manifold supposedly transforms the car but would mess up your warranty.

You're clearly not driving hard enough. I came back this afternoon with an average of 25 mpg :D And boiled brake fluid

This was my decision also a few weeks ago, I decided that petrol cost and road tax and servicing are never going to go down so there was only one choice... the twinair and the last thing is the green issue 95g/km is a lot different to 149g/km. Imagine putting out 50g less of co2 every kilometre, im sorry but that makes me feel a lot better.

But if your worried about saving money why are you looking to buy a new car?

The Euro 5 1.4 with stop start is 130grs/km and surprisingly the multi-air 1.4 turbo engine when it arrives will be the same !
If you run a 1.4 on LPG it's apparently London congestion charge free. It must dip below the 100 grs/km. So it's a good option if you want to cut down on burning holes in the ozone layer.:)

Maybe you'll save enough to take a foreign holiday?:)

My god, you guys must all be kicking the utter nuts off your 1.4's!

I'm very grumpy if I get less then 42mpg average, currently sitting at 45mpg on this fill up.
And I thought I was willing to use the power when I fancied it on acceleration to get upto speed and brisk runs along the motorways.
Incidently, mines the Euro4 spec model.

it was the ongoing costs not the initial costs I was concerned with as I am not on a huge wage. I could of bought a bigger second-hand car, saved the money and used that to pay for servicing and running but money burns a hole in my pocket and I would of spent it:D

CO2 isn't burning holes in ozone layers, that's CFC's ;)

I'll be dead before the ozone has any major effect on us.

I'd rather use a fuel to give the car more power....
