Styling LED number plate lights

Styling LED number plate lights

It's a pity we don't see more TO's out there, but they're never to be seen.
That's why so many people don't care about using mobiles, not wearing seat belts etc.
In reality, depending on where you live of course, there's not much chance of getting caught, is there?

True enough, I didn't see a single Police Traffic Car on my entire journey from Ashford back to the East Midlands last weekend. What I did see however, was some old dear on the M20 sat squarely in the centre lane doing 60 mph with a mobile phone strapped firmly to her face. I approached warily drawing almost level with her in the nearside lane, she didn't see me at all. Then I had to drop back, pull all the way over to the outside lane, overtake and crawl all the way back in again. That in my opinion just increases the danger to me. In South Africa where I have driven frequently, people undertake perfectly safely all the time, indeed it is pretty much accepted, though I believe illegal. My point is, I personally don't see the problem doing it here, then again thinking about it, it would undoubtedly be a disaster so I'll shut up! Anyway, back to topic - I still wouldn't bother going to the trouble of changing my rear number plate lights, unnecessary faff imho for what exactly? and to impress whom? Still as I said before, if people want to do it, then good luck to em (y)

Yes, but will they be legal? There are some Traffic Officers out there who would probably love to raise the issue. And don't forget, they're never wrong! Are they?....

Well sometimes they are, they can't just make it up as they go along. If its E marked it's legal (y)

Most people's down turns are talking the self into trouble :p

How about this for a solution.
This is the standard bulbs with a sticker over the fitting. It makes the colour a lot whiter and looks like leds.

I did another photo with a white piece of paper covering the number plate on the wife's car to show the difference. The one on the right is with the sticker and the one on the left is standard.

Yep, looks ok, but I still personally don't want to give the rozzers an excuse for looking at the back end of our motor for no good reason ;)

But do they work with fiats canbus system. I had some on my previous fiat and all the error free ones threw up errors :(

I've had the same problem with led number plate bulbs in my 500, tried 3 different ones and all bring up the warning light, mechanic is to get back to me about the canbus system at end of week

I can honestly say that in the 26 short years I've been driving, I've never sat behind any vehicle at night and thought 'Wow, look at those fantastic rear number plate lights!'
I can also truthfully say, I've never given a moments thought about any rear number plate lights on any vehicle I've ever owned, except for MOT time. The longest I'ver personally owned a car for, is ten years and the rear number plate bulbs never failed the whole time I had the car.

I just don't see the point of changing something as dull as number plate lights for aesthetic reasons. And like with any mod to any vehicle which isn't standard for that particular car, depending on what the mod is, can attract the wrong sort of attention from the boyz in blue, which is a hassle probably most of us can do without. Still I accept there are people who feel the need to constantly tinker. Tinker on (y)
Totally agree :slayer:

This is little known but replacing 'normal' bulbs with LEDs is actually illegal. Although you're very unlikely to be pulled over, it's something I'd rather not have on the back of my mind.
