Evening all,

My 1.3 MJ 70bhp is approaching the end of it's warantee and I'm wondering whether to keep it a while longer.

Hence I'm interested in problems people are having with them - especially in the DPF and turbo departments, having had a bill for £2.5k on an out-of-warantee Citreon recently (n).

The 500 has been reliable mechanically and is returning good mpg's still (72mpg over 175 mile round trip today for example).

Cheers

grimwau is the only person I can think of who has had major problems. I think though that his car is just a bit of a blip.

Why dont you pay for the extended warranty, Ive just taken one out on my panda. 280 odd pounds a year isnt to bad, given how much you can end up paying out if things go wrong.

Haven't they made the 500,000th 1.3 Multijet engine recently. I haven't heard of any specific issues on the Fiats or GM models. I'm more concerned about the rusty radiator I read about on here a few days ago.

Haven't heard about the rad issue (yet) but I have changed a few in my time. Warantee is an option.., but for the 500 it's more like £350 so £700 for two years vs that towards something else/repairs!

Radiators are aluminium so I'm not sure what was rusty on that person's car....

Numbers don't always tell the full storey..., as I found with the Citroen lump (which also powers Mini Cooper D, Ford TDCi, obviously many PSA group motors). Yet TurboTechnics wouldn't sell me a turbo for it

Was there not a thread where people listed the problems they'd had? I've had a couple of extra oil changes because of DPF related issues, had 'fuel cut off switch unavailable' warnings which the dealer neither understands or can fix, and I've had to have the clutch and flywheel replaced because of the noisy pipework in the gearbox - although I guess (hopefully) none of these will get you if they havent already.

have a look at warranty direct for cover

i would not own a turbo diesel without a warranty, some very expensive potential bills if the common rail fuel pump or unit injectors fails

depends on your attitude to risk/insurance really

Definitely. Personally I'd never have an extended warranty, but then that's because I'd never buy something where there was a high risk of big bills so i'd never really have that need for an extended warranty. Again it's all personal preference ;)(y)
