Our lovely white 1.2 Lounge has come to live with us and the Barchetta. Its only got 800 miles on the clock so far but I'm struggling to get more than 40mpg driving gently with a mind to the car's newness. Will this improve? We do a mixture of town and motorway so the driving is variable, but my wife has a much heavier right foot than me!

Perhaps you've answered your own question with your last point there!:D Although....keep it quiet for your own sake!

There's all sorts of things that will have an effect on consumption; how often do you have the air con on, when in town how often do you keep stopping and starting, are you driving at peak times, are you driving from cold a lot etc etc.

The advertised urban rate of 45-47mpg is very hard to obtain because city driving is so variable, but if you're doing A-road or motorway journeys then you'll easily be able to achieve 50's.

The cold weather isn't going to help over the next few months but there is nothing for you to worry about - low 40's to start with isn't terrible especially with the mixed journeys.

I get 50mpg after 6500 miles if I am not flooring it everywhere.

mine started off at 38mpg...ended on av of 47mpg...

Thanks Guys, this all makes sense. I havn't used the aircon yet and I do have the stop-start on, but I'm not convinced this saves fuel at all. However, I love the car and it seems to be universally admired!

You should use the air con regularly. Especially in the cold when the windows need demisting.

How accurate is the trip computer? I've just hit 8000 miles doing a 50 mile commute each day - traffic jam, motorways, b roads, a roads. Pretty good mix and the computer says average over 8000 miles is 50.9.
Seems quite high compared to you other 1.2 owners, and I have a heavy right foot. I do use start/stop though

I find the trip computer to be optimistic by about 5mpg, so you have probably averaged around 46mpg over your 8000 miles. That's consistent with others, given your 'heavy right foot'.

Mine has managed just over 55mpg actual over the first 2000 miles, but the trip computer generally indicates 60+mpg on each tankful.

Best to describe it as 'predictably inaccurate', as that 5mpg difference seems to be pretty constant. And FWIW, my new ecoPanda's trip computer is about 5mpg optimistic, too!

It's about 8-10% out. My car is currently saying 57 which is probably about 53 or so. I'm hoping to finally make it to 500 miles on this tank......

maxi- how DO you get 57MPG?....on the trip albeit...

what mix of driving/ style do you have?

its amazing!

i could never get near!

the stop start WILL save fuel- all the fuel wasted when you are at a standstill...in urban driving this can be quite substantial!

it is a very worthwhile addition if you use it as intended...

Skinny tyres, careful driving, as little braking as possible and trying not to do short journeys. My drive to work is 19 miles of mainly country a-roads and driving through a couple of small towns. On my current tank I've driven to Llandrindod Wells which was about a 100 miles each way too. Other people do better than me anyway :)

All of that, (especially the bit about avoiding short journeys) plus moderating your acceleration & changing up at the earliest sensible RPM. Limiting your top speed will also help considerably.

On a decent run, I've seen 70mpg on the trip - but a genuine 60mpg tankful still eludes me.

Reset trip after filling up with petrol, drove 1.2 miles home on warm engine. Next morning drove 30 miles to work, 3 miles urban, 26 miles dual carriageway cruising 50 - 60 mph depending upon speed of vehicle in front, and 1 mile stopping and starting in queue. Pholto taken with engine still running after reversing into parking space. If I'd gone forwards in it would have read 70.1 and it had been saying 73 point something before the final queue.

i think you will find this high average comes down as you do more urban mileage, and less 50mph A road stuff-

you would have to be fantastically gentle to attain these figures daily with a more typical journey/speed pattern...

i could attain these figures in my 500 on a run from oxford to henley as was gentle 50-60 mph stuff with minimal stops- the moment my commute resumed- back down to 46-7mpg..

i think any roads with a 70mph average speed take 60MPG out of the equation for the 1.2...

Drove from Bournemouth to Hereford and back and got an average of 55.4 mpg
That was on a mix of B roads and Motorway.

Had 70 mpg, But i was doing 30-40 mph everywhere :)

As I always say it's easy to get these figures with a warm engine, going in one direction (usually downhill) and in ideal conditions.

The real measure is what the car will do over 10-20 tanks :)
