General Have I just been mugged off for servicing?

Last September I paid £130 plus VAT (which came to about £160) for my car's first service at Thames Fiat in Croydon, I called them first because that's where I bought the car in the first place, despite the fact I now live the other side of London. The car had done about 5,800 miles at the time.

Noddi goes into Arnie's in Oldbury, West Mids, on Friday for 1st service, quoted £165.

I am having to pay an extra £11.50 for a car for the day, which I do not mind (I am sure a hire car would be a lot more). There are a couple of minor faults, which I am guessing (hoping) will be picked up under warranty.

Beep, beep

It's interesting though to see the significant differences in price and policies with the main dealers.

My 1st service cost £125 all in (it would have been pretty much the same if I'd just let them use their parts as well) and in any case I got a courtesy car included for free. There are quite a few people on here who would equally argue that £125 is too much for a first service as well!

So all in all you are paying almost around 30% more for what is effectively the same service and have to stump up for a car as well (albeit not a huge amount). Seems a little OTT although appreciate you are happy to pay that price.

Glad I read all the above info, as I have been phoning round for quotes on my second service:-

Quote 1 £500.00
Quote 2 £565.00
Quote 3 £185.00

After nearly having the shock of my life I have studied the service manual and decided that I was incorrect I do not need a yearly service! As I have very low mileage, only just turned 10K.

Not one dealer explained this to me, guess they are hungry for the work!!!:bang:, will just book in for an oil change, as I had the first sevice carried out last year, in error.

Thanks for all your help

I just been quoted £298 for my 30,000 mile service. 3 hour job. Brake fluid change, pollen filter, air filter, etc.

Just been quoted £240 at Thames Slough for the oil, oil filter, brake fluid change, pollen filter (instead of spark plugs as mine's a diesel), air filter & MOT. I've done 25,000 miles in 3 years.

They noted suspension ball joint damaged, will repair under warranty.

In addition brake pads down to 80% & discs have rust on them - quoted £343(n), but I'm gonna buy parts (probably Mintex discs & pads for £76 or Brembo £95) and get local garage to for for me.

Another issue is oil sump damaged, gonna cost another £400 to fix!! :bang:

2nd service is due next month, i am approaching 16,000 miles on clock

Have had the following quotes:

Essex Auto Group £325
Glyn Hopkin Romford £260
Glyn Hopkin Buckhurst Hill £275
Fiat Battersea £240 but also advice brake fluid change @ £86

Will probably go with fiat battersea - without the brake fluid - this is normally done at 36,000?

No, the brake fluid is done @ 2 years.

Just to tag on the end of this one, can anyone confirm exactly what parts are needed for the 2nd year service for a 1.2?

If my understanding is correct it should be as follows:

Oil (3 litres worth with a dribble left over
4 Spark Plugs
Filter kit (air, oil, pollen)
Brake fluid (anyone know how much fluid is required for this service?).

Apart from stuff that specifically needs to be replaced for individual cars, that's about it isn't it?

That's correct. I think its a litre of brake fluid but just check

Thanks Maxi, will have a look in the manual to confirm exactly how much is supposed to go in for the brake fluid.

Anyway if you plonk all of those items in shop4parts it comes to £98 - and that includes P&P without any discounts either. So you may possibly be able to get it cheaper still.

Interesting when you look at some of the prices quoted by other posters on here for a second year service. The ones that were over £300 are basically charging £200+ for labour if you look at it that way. Ouch!:D

Just paid £200 for low mileage first service for Punto Abarth, a bit more than Fiat but I guess its to be expected. Very pleased with the service overall. It was done in Thames, Slough and got courtesy car charged for only one day even I had it for 4 (due to some warranty work and them not having parts in stock)

Not to be funny though, but as is always said, it IS just a Fiat so why should servicing be more expensive?
