Hello everyone,

My wives new 1.2 sport has only done a couple of k

When you brake for the first time in the morning , very gently round the wee left hander out side my house it vibrates like the abs is activated .

This happens vat very low speed and is very easy to miss .

Generally the brakes feel ok , no real concerns .

Any one got any thoughts on this , it's going in soon for a recall soon and I will mention it to dealer .

Look forward to you responses.

Derek

My A500 does this too. Is the said road on a slight slope as well? Every morning whilst pulling out the drive, i'm going slower than walking pace and it still comes on!

Nothing to worry about though, it's probably just a bad/abrasive road surface causing the wheels to slightly lock up (y)

Have a quick look at your disks, before you set off in a morning, my bet is they look a little rusty, on 1st application of brakes this causes the juddering, and if you stop and check the disks will be nice an shiney, as you've just cleaned them ready for use. This seems to be a common "feature" of the latest type of material used in disk brakes since asbestos was band in the brake pads.

First thing I would say, is don't brake in a corner. One thing at a time for the front wheels.

Does your car have ESP?

It could be cold rusty brakes, it could be cold tyres.

Cheers

D

yeah that!

if it is very low speed why are you braking at all?

I'll second (or third or whatever) the rusty brake disc theory.. Our drive from house down to the main road is really steep at the end so I need to brake considerably even though I'm only travelling 5-10mph.. it is a little 'crunchy' after rain particularly, and especially after cleaning the car.. (lots of water onto the rotors to make them a temporarily rusty).

Mine does this too at the bottom of the drive of the nursing home where my Grandmother lives. It only does it there, as I'm braking and turning slighly left at less than 10mph as the drive dips down from path height to road level.

Can the discs be rusty after only being there 20mins sometimes?

Spike

Thanks for the replies

Looks like one or two of you have experienced the same thing ,

As it only happens in the same place in the morning at walking place whilst approaching a blind junction ! It could well be a self cleaning type thing to remove the rust from the discs , good theory , I'll check the condition of discs before setting off next time.

It's a very subtle vibration , not at all like my experience of abs activation , perhaps Ill take the wee 500 out for a proper road test and activate the abs to see if it feels the same , does abs have a variation in force felt through the pedal !

Will let you know

Derek

I've got the same symptoms, but it happens at the beginning of every journey. If i brake gently and turn gently either left or right there is a ratcheting noise from the front. Just taken mine to the local Fiat dealer, displayed the noise to a technician by starting the car that i had just driven 6 miles (negating rusty disc's), drove 100 yards then gently braked whilst turning to the left, i then turned the engine off and on and repeated the exercise, the tech heard the noise both times.
Initial diagnosis was that the pads may need cleaning. Upon picking the car up the final diagnosis was that the ABS unit was "kicking in early" but there was nothing to worry about. Ive done a bit of digging and i believe that these ABS units are only designed to operate a certain amount of cycles, so eventually mine will break, probably after the warranty has expired!!!!!!!
Does anybody know why the ABS unit would be "kicking in early" i.e does this unit perform a self test?
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks

KNown issue, speak to dealer, software update, will resolve !!

I don't know if anyone is still suffering from this, my 500 was until a couple of days ago when i put my winter tyres and wheels on! No idea why the fitting of steel wheels would stop it but it has. Odd i know but I thought I'd share the experience.

Does it only do it first thing in the morning and does it clear up after a few applications of the pedal?

Could it be the ABS self-test that you can hear? I had a Mercedes E-Class a decade ago whose ABS self-test routine was clearly audible at the start of every journey when the car reached walking pace for the first time. I haven't noticed it on our 500 or felt any vibration at the pedal but provided the brakes work OK and the ABS warning light doesn't come on, I would probably assume it's part of the way the system works.

+1 for ABS self test.

Usually when you first go over 5 or 6mph. Not sure of exact implementation.

If you have your foot on the brake when this occurs you will feel it.

Happens on our 500 at the end of the cul-de-sac braking for the junction pretty much every morning I notice it, then at no other point.

As mentioned before it has always happened on mine when turning left and braking at low speeds usually off of a drive as it dips from kerb height to meet the road. The curious thing is that now I have fitted my winter tyres and wheels it has stopped! Anyone got a theory on that!

You know what I was going to start a new thread about this very thing,
just after setting off at the end of our street, going very slowly (in case I need to stop at the T junction) whilst braking gently and turning the wheel to the left I get a vibration for a fraction of a second through the brake pedal, only once, after that nothing.
Coming out of the hospital multi story after going round and down lots(which I just remember is to the right all the way down), did the very same thing just after the pay barrier, again very slow, gentle braking, turning left,
have not noticed anything going right, my have to try just out of interest,
59 plate 1.2 pop, brake discs were just replaced too, no issues in braking terms
Any idea's ?

Ah, my bad, didn't see all the reply's when starting the thread, only the top line, seems I don't need to worry, live right beside the sea so lots of salt air.
