I test drove a 500C 1.3 multijet lounge this week and the wind noise on the motorway was excessive.
The dealer said this would be sorted out on the PDI which hadn't yet been done. I have put a deposit down on the car on the understanding this work is done before collection.
The dealer says there is still wind noise over seventy louder than it should be, Has anyone else experienced problems?

What do you expect from a car which has had the roof cut out and replaced with canvas?

A 500 hatchback is already quite loud in terms of tyre noise, a 500c is only going to be worse than that. If the car had 16" alloys then it's going to be even worse.

The noise was excessive wind noise caused by roof not closing properly, I have owned numerous cabriolets and expect more noise as part of the charm of owning one.

We also drove a 500C 1.2 pop which had an acceptable level of noise am trying to ascertain whether this a common problem and likely to re occur when fixed by dealership.

Well why didn't you say that the roof wasn't closed properly?

I have a 500c and in my opinion the car drives (when roof is up;)) with little or no more noise than you would get in a hard top car, even on the motorway. I have owned a few convertibles in the past and this one is a pleasure as so far no leaks, no excessive noise, no draughts etc.

Hope that when you test it after dealer has fixed problem that everything is fine.

Agreed.

To be honest as an owner of a 500C I think the road noise is unacceptable. My partner stills chuckles at my first words as I drove it off the forecourt on pick up day: "Do you think they've forgotten to sound proof it?", simple because the road roar (from the 16" wheels) was unbelievable, compared to the 500 hatch I had previously.

As for the roof not closing properly, then that would obviously make it noisy at 70mph, and if my roof failed to close properly I certainly wouldn't then test drive it at 70, assuming you did national speed limit on the motorway?

Perhaps you should test drive a car that isn't broken to compare?? I don't think wind noise is a problem on mine but the road roar is truly awful with a bone shaker of a ride.

Still, with the roof down its a different car completely.

When I testdrove the 500c I would say it had a bit more wind noise but like you say nothing excessive. I took it up to about 50 or so and there was a difference but not a massive one.

As the owner of a 500c 1.3 mj, I have to say that I am very impressed with the overall wind noise from the car with the roof up considering it's just a canvas roof. I think there is more of a road noise issue coming from below your head rather than above it. I think there is an excessive amount of road noise coming through the floor of the car. I know this is greatly affected by tyre, wheel size etc. but I'm sure improved sound deadening would also help.

I don't find the wind or road noise too bad on the c - yes it's more than a bigger car but you'd expect that

The only thing I'd say is that you can hear the traffic around you more when stationary and you can hear the rain - it's a bit like being in a tent!

The originally poster states that the roof won't close properly on the car he test drove, hence in my eyes its broken.

If one were driven with a working roof it may be a different story (y)

Steve, he did drive one that was working properly and states that it was OK. That was why I quoted this.

We also drove a 500C 1.2 pop which had an acceptable level of noise.
