I've a 500 1.3MJ that is currently at the dealer for new discs and pads.

Despite having no warning of low pads (the brake wear warning light is referred to on page 100 of the manual), the pads have worn low enough to damage the nearside disc.

Has anyone else suffered the same problem?

Thanks,

Spd.

I'd say only one pair of pads (offside presumably) have a wear sensor. Bigger question: Why such uneven wear?

I've asked them to try and answer that question. I've also told them I'm not happy paying for the new discs.

So far, they've only offered 'some discount'.

Wear indicator wire is on N/S pad (caliper side), but to be honest- it's rare for the wiring to not break anyway considering what it has to put up with (it's only a single thin wire). Is the wear actually uneven?- have you seen the pads?

It's only an advisory light anyway, and if you've got alloys you can physically see the outer pads at least without any effort. ;)

Slightly silly bit of design. On the wifes Subaru the pads have a tab on them which scrapes noisily against the discs when the pads are close to being ready to go. Telling us how many miles the car had done, how old it is etc etc would be good though. If you've done a billion miles and not replaced the pads..... well then you're a little bit daft to rely on a light to tell you when they should be done. If you've done 3k miles and only 1 pad has any noticeable wear at all then we're talking grounds for a complaint :)

Just had my front wheels off today (easy way out to replace DRL bulb) and as D4nny8oy said sensor on inner pad on NSF and after 14500 miles mine are about half worn and importantly all four are worn evenly, no sticky pistons or calipers. (y)

Off topic but typically as soon as I started to turn the bulb holder the light came on.

So the two replacement (PIAA - £32.00) ones that arrived today are now spares.

The 500 is heavier on discs and pads than you'd think. I do a lot of trackwork and I get through 3 or 4 sets of pads a year and a couple of sets of discs.

The uneven wear is a cause for concern though. I'd ask to see the old discs and pads.

This does highlight an interesting point though. Much as cars these days are sold as an appliance, they really aren't. If you don't want to be surprised by these kinds of bills, routinely getting under it and having a look is probably a good idea.

Amen to that. Then there are the people who think that because it's a new car that it won't need any maintenance other than services.
