Just a word of caution.

I pulled in to a rural service station and undid the fuel cap ready to fill up. Before I had chance the elderly owner came across and said "We fill you up Sir, how much do you want?" I said "£20 of diesel please". He then started chatting about the weather etc while he filled the tank. When he put the cap back on he swore. He'd seen the diesel sticker on the cap. Said he'd just put £20 of petrol in!!! He accepted that it was his fault and as it was a garage too they fully drained and flushed the tank and then topped the tank right up. Because the ignition wasn't turned on no petrol was taken into the fuel lines etc.

Because I'd already removed the filler cap, he didn't see the Diesel sticker which is on the cap.
Even so he should have checked but I thought I would pass this on as a warning to anyone else.

Always keep a close eye on things when the service station is filling the tank for you.

A good end to your story :) A little sad that with the lack of margin he probably makes on fuel that it probably put a dent in his takings for the day!

I love filling up my "By Diesel" with petrol..people look and see Diesel on the side of the car and see me putting petrol in.

Eeek I always worry about accidentally putting the wrong fuel in my car - although now I've got a petrol I think it's pretty much impossible as the wrong nozzles don't fit that way round? I seem to keep alternating between diesel cars and petrol ones though, and worry that I'll forget during an absent minded moment! I've only done it once, years ago - put petrol in my diesel Freelander...but luckily I'd only put about £1.10 worth in a pretty much empty tank, and the petrol attendant assured me that if I topped it right up with diesel it would be ok. Which it was thankfully!

Generally a small amount of incorrect fuel should not damage the engine as long as you have not started the car and top up fully with diesel fuel.
  • If you've added more than 10% (5 litres in a 50 litre tank) petrol – Drain the tank and refill with diesel
  • If you've added less than 10% petrol (5 litres in a 50 litre tank) – Top up with diesel and run normally unless the manufacturer has advised otherwise
Ive not done it myself but there is always a first time esp if your minds wondering or gone on hols

Very true. I've been told that in ye olde days people would actually put a little petrol in with the diesel to stop it solidifying in winter.

Having any form of external marking incorporating the word "Diesel" on a petrol engined car is just inviting a misfuelling incident.

A tragic accident in the aviation world resulted in all turbocharged piston engined aircraft having a mandatory airworthiness directive to permanently remove any "TURBO" markings after a ground refueller put turbine fuel in one by mistake, with fatal consequences.

Sadly true. You would think someone refuelling would have looked to see whether it said AVTUR or AVGAS :(
