I pick up my 500c next week and will fit a removable towbar for the camping trailer which I will fit myself - has anyone used the Genuine towbar wiring kit for the trailer electrics and is it plug and play?? - Part number 50901945 – 7/13 pin wiring kit - I cant find the kit price online in the accesories brochure..............anyone know the cost and ease of fitting??

Cheers

Paul

a 7 pin is the norm in the UK where as there is a push with newer caravans using the European 13 in plug.... in time i can see 13 pin becoming the norm

your other alternative is a 7 way can bus bypass relay and wire that in..

this is how my Grande punto is wired....

Just for advice, fitting of a tow bar is a modification to the car and should be declared. There is an article in the latest Auto Express where someone had their insurance invalidated due to fitting a towbar and not declaring it

I can't see most insurers creating too much of a stink about this - I'm sure most policies give at least third party cover for trailers and caravans too. Shop around if yours gives hassle

On the original posting - at the prices you're looking at, is it really worthwhile fitting the towbar and elecrics yourself? I had a removable Thule towbar, plus 7-pin electrics, fitted by Indespension for £250 - they have fitting centres throughout the country. At that price it's not really worth getting your hands dirty

None of the insurers will cause too much stink, until you need to claim and they find out. Another Auto Express quote "A non-approved bar may invalidate your insurance cover. "

It is not worth saving a few pounds, compared to invalidated insurance.

As long as the towbar is type approved you shouldn't have an issue. Most manufacturers Thule (was Brink), Witter and Westfalia will all have type approval.

There is no harm in letting your insurer know. Slightly different modification but I called NFU today to let them know we have had a mild tinted window film applied on our 500 and received written acknowledgment in return.

I too am thinking of fitting - or having it fitted - a towbar and electrics for our 2011 500 Lounge.

Is there an up-to-date link for the Fiat electrics?
Is it plug-and-play like the OP was asking?
I don't mind paying the Fiat price because it will be specific for the 500.

Thanks guys,
Mick.

Excellent, thanks.
I'm very much tempted. :)
Westfalia bookmarked for later.

Not much info on the dedicated electrics, but I suppose it comes with full instructions.

Ta very much,
Mick.

Just reading the instructions for the Westfalia towbar ..........

It seems you have to cut the rear bumper!:mad:

Is there any towbar available for the Fiat 500 that DOESN'T require the bumper to be cut?

Cheers,
Mick.

You'll need to search for the fitting instructions on sites like Towsure and PF Jones, they seem to stock all the popular bars.

Most bumper cuts for bars aren't visible, they are usually underneath to allow an under and up fitment of the hook/ball/bracket.

I considered fitting my own bar and dedicated wiring kit to my Panda 4x4, so I rang my dealer to check about any warranty problems.

I was told there was no problem, even fitting a 7 way bypass, as long as it's fitted properly, to be sure they suggested some sort of proof a pro fitted it would be handy.

They put me in contact with their towbar man, he's a mobile fitter that covers a lot of dealers in the South of London, not just Fiat, though he turned up in a Doblo and knew all the Fiat products very well.

He fitted the lot, at the dealers for less than I could have done myself.
A nice tidy detatchable Thule with a flip up electric socket, you really can't tell there's a bar fitted once the hook and ball is removed.
All for £365.

I just had a Thule tow bar fitted to my new car, non Fiat. They had to cut the bumper but you dont notice it. Its actually quite good as the tow bar blends into the car better, as there in no gap showing. Not explaining well but you know what i mean.

Just one thing, Insurance. As others have said, ring you insurance company and inform them. They should send out new docs with the tow bar shown as a mod, but will not add anything to your premium. If you dont do that and ever have to claim your insurance will be invalid.
